While the wry and erudite blend of reggae, salsa, and lounge music on Río practically sings the praises of globalization, Columbian duo Andrea Echeverri and Hector Buitrago refuse to abandon the world-in-crisis theme of every Aterciopelados record since 1998's Caribe Atómico. There are some uncharacteristically sunny lyrical moments, as Echeverri trades puns with her young daughter on "Ataque de Risa" and assembles items from a picnic shopping list on "Tomate." Of course, righteous indignation comes to the forefront with blazing attacks on global warming ("Dia Paranormal") and Columbia's potable-water crisis (on the record's muy caliente bookends "Río" and "Agüita"). Soothing sounds and tremolo guitars belie the furious lyrical bent, but the group's musical palette has expanded enormously to encompass everything from hip-hop to electronica over the past decade. It's proof positive that old punks don't lose their edge-they just cultivate better taste.

Esta será la primera ocasión en que unos latinos "crucen" elRío hacia Estados Unidos y recorran este país sin ningún contratiempo. Se trata de Aterciopelados, que comenzará su gira el próximo 2 de abril en el State Theatre de la ciudad de Washington para que sus seguidores puedan escuchar en vivo su más reciente álbum llamado precisamente Río.

La banda colombiana continuará su gira por la Unión Americana en Boston (Samba Bar) para el día 3 de abril, un día después actuará en New York City (Highline Ballroom), el 5 de abril tocará el turno a Chicago (House of blues) y dos días después a Kansas City (The Beaumont Club).
Para el 10 de abril tocará el turno a San Francisco(The Independent), posteriormente a San Diego (House of blues); el día 15 de abril los intérpretes deFlorecita Rockera se presentarán en Los Ángeles (Conga Room), el 16 de abril en Anaheim (House of Blues) para concluir el 17 en Miami Beach (73rd Street Bandshell).
Con esta gira la banda se suma otro logro a los ya obtenidos por su álbum Río, que se ha colocado en la cuarta posición de Itunes Latino y en el primer lugar de ventas delAmazon Latin Pop, además muchos críticos especializados en publicaciones de gran prestigio han calificado al álbum como "el mejor de su carrera".
El álbum de la agrupación fue grabado en el estudio que tienen Héctor Buitrago y Andrea Echeverri en su natal Bogotá y fue mezclado en Nueva York por Héctor Castillo (Brazilian Girls, David Bowie, Gustavo Cerati) in New York City y recupera el sonido orgánico de la banda.
La apertura del álbum y el primer sencillo de esta nueva producción (Río) coincide con un referéndum constitucional del país de la banda, que dice que tomar agua limpia es un derecho constitucional y humano básico.
Otro dato importante de este disco es la participación de Milagros, la hija de Andrea Echeverri que cuenta con tan solo seis años de edad, en la canción Ataque de Risa, así que todo indica que la pequeña hija de Andrea y Héctor podría dedicarse a la música.
"Este track fue originalmente iba a ser para el un álbum para niños que ehabía estado grabando con Manolo, mi esposo y Milagros en el estudio de nuestra casa, con el primer par de canciones, Milagros estaba nerviosa en el micrófono pero ahora tiene alegría y confía más en ella".

Un disco ecológico es la nueva propuesta que traen los músicos colombianos. Con este pretenden crear conciencia sobre la importancia de cuidar el medio ambiente

En sus casi 20 años en la música, Aterciopelados le ha cantado al amor, al despecho y a la vida cotidiana. Pero en sus últimas producciones se ha dedicado a navegar en un mar de conciencia ecológica, y así lo ratifica en Río, su más reciente disco.
El agua como fuente de vida (sobre todo una denuncia contra la contaminación del río de Bogotá), la inmigración, la maternidad: como la arquitecta de la vida y la política, son los puntos que aborda en su disco la vocalista Andrea Echeverri y el bajista Héctor Buitrago.
En Río , el dúo de colombianos se sumerge en aguas más profundas, para explorar en un sonido propio, a la caza de esos hallazgos musicales que siempre han buscado.
Por eso, en esta nueva producción, los músicos se han adentrado en ritmos que parecen sacados de la música precolombina.
Las percusiones de djembé , sonidos emitidos por flautistas y cantos tradicionales indígenas, son los encargados de darle vida al álbum.
La vocalista del grupo conversó con Viva sobre estos y otros temas, desde su casa, en Cajicá, un pueblo a media hora de Bogotá, Colombia.
"Verde". Río es todo un ruego para proteger el medio ambiente. ¿Con este disco, Aterciopelados busca darle continuidad al referendo por el agua, que pretende que parte de este líquido sea gratuito para los colombianos?
Sí, tiene que ver con el referendo, en el que estuvimos involucrados sobre todo cuando grabamos Oye (2006). Pero también tiene que ver con la situación ambiental en general, que es muy preocupante.
En sus comienzos, Aterciopelados le cantaba más al amor. Pero en sus últimas producciones han explorado el tema ambiental, en un momento en que la industria de la música se enfoca en propuestas mucho más comerciales...
Creo que los problemas ecológicos es algo en lo que hay que insistir. Hay que ayudar en la creación de una cultura ambiental.
"Aquí en Colombia la cosa (el tema ambiental) no tiene mucha fuerza, pienso que uno desde su lugar público tiene que concientizar para que no acaben con la naturaleza.
"La música es un vehículo ideal para lanzar mensajes, mandar energía y acompañar a las personas".
¿Por qué se escoge Río como nombre de su novena producción?
El título del disco se escogió precisamente porque la intención es amarrar la vida del disco con campañas ambientales. Así como estuvimos involucrados por el agua, la idea es seguir buscando campañas ambientales asociadas.
¿Qué simboliza la anaconda que viene impresa en su carátula?
La anaconda que viene impresa en la carátula del disco tiene que ver con unos mitos indígenas de las Amazonas, donde la anaconda ancestral es la madre de la humanidad. Tiene que ver con el río (de Bogotá) también.
"Es un grafiti hecho en Bogotá, pero no es con aerosol, es con pincel y vinilo, es un grafiti ecológico, y lo que simboliza es la preocupación de nosotros, como seres urbanos, para con la naturaleza".
Maternidad. En 28, Aterciopelados canta a la maternidad, ¿qué busca reflejar con esa pieza?
Mientras se producía el disco yo estaba embarazada. La canción 28 tiene que ver conmigo. El tema de la mujer es importante, la maternidad es un milagro. Pero por lo común (que es estar embarazada) ha pasado a un plano mínimo.
"Ser mamá ya no es mágico, ya no es especial. Entonces, nos pareció bonito hacerle un homenaje a la maternidad y a la naturaleza, que es la madre de todos".
Día paranormal también hace alusión a la política. ¿Es este tema una crítica abierta al gobierno colombiano y a la FARC?
Sí, es una crítica abierta al gobierno colombiano. También se habla de la relación con el paramilitarismo, con la guerrilla.
"En este tema también buscamos retratar la realidad, que la realidad es increíble, mejor dicho, parece paranormal. La canción comienza con la frase ‘hoy se doblan cucharas', en alusión a un parapsicólogo, Uri Geller, que doblaba cucharas con la mente, en los ochenta.
"Así que, ‘hoy se doblan cucharas' hace referencia a que la normalidad está totalmente alterada".
El disco también abre una ventana al tema de la inmigración, con la canción Bandera. ¿Tiene que ver con alguna experiencia personal?
La canción nació porque como en tres o cuatro veces nos han negado la visa a España, pero ya con todos los conciertos programados, ha sido muy difícil. Aquí, en Colombia, los procesos para la visa española son muy complicados.
"Así se pierden conciertos y dinero. Finalmente, siempre viajamos pero con dos o tres días tardes y un sobrecosto de tiquetes.
"De ahí sale la canción. Pero también es una reflexión para los conquistados y conquistadores, los puentes los crearon ellos hace mucho tiempo, ahora ya no quieren tener que ver con los conquistados, la cosa es muy injusta".
Sonoridad. ¿Qué marca la diferencia en los sonidos de Río, con respecto al resto de la discografía de Aterciopelados?
Lo que marca la diferencia es la música andina; hay muchos ingredientes que vienen desde atrás. Los sonidos tienen mucho que ver con la conexión con los indígenas.
"(El disco es) una continuación de la propuesta de Aterciopelados, de buscar un estilo propio, fusionando muchos estilos de música. Tiene un poco de pop, electrónica, folclore, rock , chamánica e hindú".
En este álbum, ¿entonces encontraron al fin esos arreglos musicales que tanto ansiaban?
Creo que en cada disco se encuentra un lugar, pero para Aterciopelados es importante no volver a caer en ese lugar. Seguir experimentando, buscando lugares.
"Es importante buscar como las raíces, incluir más elementos de identidad, jugar con eso. Pienso que la lúdica es importante".
¿Qué otros artistas participan en este disco?
Contamos con la voz de Gloria Martínez, Goyo, ella es una cantante rapera que está teniendo mucho éxito en Colombia. Además participan muchos músicos andinos.
"Samuel es otro invitado, su propuesta se basa en los cantos de Mongolia y Cuba, él participa en varias canciones. Mi hija, Milagros, canta en Ataque de risa".
¿Qué planes tiene Aterciopelados para promocionar el material?
La promoción comenzará en Estados Unidos, en el mes de abril, ahí serían los primeros toques.
"Pero en marzo queremos hacer un evento para conmemorar el Día de los Ríos en Colombia, algo simbólico. Tenemos previstas otras fechas en España, República Dominicana y México. En el caso de Costa Rica, sería después, aún no hemos programado nada".

La agrupación de rock Aterciopelados presenta Río, su séptimo álbum musical cuyo eje es el tema ambiental. Andrea Echeverry, voz líder del grupo, explica lo que buscan con este trabajo, de 13 canciones, que saldrá al mercado colombiano este 27 de marzo bajo su sello propio Entrecasa.
¿Por qué el tema ambiental es la característica del nuevo álbum?
Porque la Madre Tierra necesita un cambió de actitud de la raza que la puebla.
'Río', el nombre del álbum, hace referencia al río Bogotá. ¿Cuál es la intención?
Es ingenuo pensar que con un disco se va a curar el río, pero es una manera de llamar la atención sobre su grave estado.
¿A qué le huele el río Bogotá?
A picho.
¿Qué más tiene el álbum que lo hace ecológico?
Además de las canciones, el graffiti que aparece en la carátula tiene el agua como base y el empaque es de papel reciclado.
¿Han cambiado las temáticas de sus canciones?
Antes enviábamos buena y mala energía, pero después del álbum 'Gozo poderoso' ya no mandamos mala energía.
¿Por qué?
Uno veía en los conciertos que la gente empezaba a pegarse y después nos contaban historias terribles. Eso nos asustó.
¿Ha cambiado el público de Aterciopelados?
Están los fieles, pero los de la edad de uno ya no van a conciertos ni siguen en la onda. El público en Colombia es raro.
¿Qué pasó con la "mujer gala"?
La mujer de esa canción da ganas de hacer música y reinventarse. Lo curioso es que en estos días la descubrió mi hija Milagros y estaba fascinada.
¿Lo más difícil de grabar embarazada?
El esfuerzo que se hace para cantar y el obviar el traguito que ayudaba a quitar el estrés.
¿Qué se fue cuando llegó la maternidad?
La irresponsabilidad.
¿Cuántos hijos más quiere tener?
Planto.
Un secreto de Héctor, su compañero en Aterciopelados...
Cuando grabamos el disco, la esposa de él también estaba embarazada y le pusieron a su hijo Balán, que significa tigre en una lengua maya.
¿Cómo define Andrea lo masculino?
Me mete en un problema. Me rodeo de hombres no tan hombres.
¿Cómo así?
La energía masculina reconcentrada es lo que tiene el mundo patas arriba, está desbocada. La competencia, la agresividad.
¿Qué piensa del Ipod?
Que es buenísimo para los viajes pero me agobia con tanta información.
¿Y del Blackberry?
Hay que desconectarse a ratos.
Aparte de la televisión, ¿qué otro electrodoméstico desterró de la casa?
El microondas. Me parece sospechosísimo.
El lanzamiento del álbum será el Teatro Metro de Bogotá, en el que participarán también Richard Blair & Buena Vibra Soundsystem. También, como parte de la campaña ecológica, los fanáticos de la banda que presenten en los puntos autorizados de venta de boletas un celular para reciclar con batería, recibirán una entrada a cambio.

Shortly after Aterciopelados' lead singer Andrea Echeverri gives birth to her second child, the Colombian band will begin touring the US in April to support their latest melodic rock release, Rio (Nacional).
Aterciopelados, or "The Velvety Ones," were rewarded for their eclectic musical roots-ing with a Latin Grammy for their album, Oye, in 2006. Since then, they've teamed up with Amnesty International to create "The Price of Silence" music video, which commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights. Their latest music video for "Rio" overlays choppy city footage with bright animated paintings of shapes, snakes and people. So in addition to having a colorfully surreal video aesthetic, they are also decent human beings—both great reasons to support Aterciopelados on their upcoming tour.

Even if you don't speak a word of Spanish, there's a pretty big chance that you know Aterciopelados , a Colombian band that jumped to the international scene in the '90s. Its heartbreak-song Bolero Falaz travelled around the world putting Colombia in the international rock-map.
Much has gone through since then and the now duo formed by Andrea Echeverry and Hector Buitrago, grown up and heading families of their own, have become more and more involved in environmental issues. So much, that their latest album is called Rio (River), and the song that names the record -for example- is a homage to the Bogota River , now polluted and in danger.
TreeHugger exchanged e-mails with one of the Aterciopelados, Hector Buitrago, who tells us about the inspiration behind Rio and the group's environmental involvement.
TreeHugger (TH): Why did you decide to make an album addressing environmental issues?
Hector Buitrago (HB): Since our album Caribe Atomico in 1998, we have had this type of restlessness that stems from a simple observation on the situation of our ecosystem. As time went by, things got worse instead of getting better and greater threats such as global warming and its consequences are truly looming over our planet. We think that it's time for each of us, habitants or sons of the earth, to try to put some effort into stopping or changing these major problems.
TH: How do you think music can influence the environmental movement?
HB: In addition to performing at environmental events that help support ecological campaigns and expand awareness, it is possible to be more active in the support of political initiatives. In our case, we have given a song to the Colombian "Referendo por el Agua" (Water Referendum) campaign. This is an effort in which citizens are trying to push for changes to the country's constitution so that clean drinking water is declared a fundamental right and more governmental attention and care is put towards the vital ecosystems.
TH: How has the response been to the new album so far?
HB: It's been great. We feel that in addition to the great musical energy and fusions on the album, we are really contributing to these important ecological initiatives and the songs are finding other spaces to express themselves and reach new audiences.

TH: What relationship do you and Andrea have with the environment? In what way does this influence your day to day lives? HB: We try to make very conscious decisions regarding the use of resources, for example, recycling or using only the necessary water. Particularly on this album, we are focused on the restoration of the river that runs through our home – the Bogota River. I navigated through it and it was really hard for me to see the situation of the river, as it suffers a very serious level of contamination. So we are trying to act more locally. As a sort of ritual, we have sung to the Bogota River with our other musical friends in the area. I think this message is clear in the lyrics for the song Rio.
TH: Do you have a "green" tip that you bring to your daily life that you'd like to share with readers?
HB:I am a vegetarian. I feel that this is yet another important way to collaborate with the environment.

Hailing from Colombia, the Aterciopelados are one of Latin America's most well-known rock groups. Since the early 90s, the duo of Andrea Echeverri and Héctor Buitrago has created a unique blend of rock and social awareness which NPR compared to "The Police and Talking Heads."Last month Aterciopelados released their latest album entitled "Rio", an effort whose titular song (MP3 sample) emphasizes environmental preservation.
Recently we were privileged to interview Buitrago via e-mail where he discussed music, fatherhood, and politics.

The Latin Americanist: First and foremost congratulations for the recent birth of your second child! How has fatherhood been treating you lately?Héctor Buitrago: Thank you! It's really something that you can only experiment and interiorize when you experience it. You feel many emotions, some new, a different kind of love - more intense, also happiness. You also have to work on your patience, your imagination...
TLA: What are your feelings about 'Río' and how does it compare to the group's previous albums?
HB: For us, 'Rio' means a new beginning. We felt that OYE from 2006 was more of a transitional album because of our extended break to release two solo albums before that. In this new album we combine what we learned from those CDs and the space they created and we head towards new terrains both in sound and concept. We also feel it's more compromising and activating. The album has already inspired political and social action.
TLA: Andrea and you are part of the Referendo por el Agua ('Water Referendum') campaign. Why is the environment so important to you both?
HB: Yes, the support for water is one of these movements. This is such a complicated time for the environment with serious threats such as global warming and the danger of water shortage. So it's time to act with a more focused effort. Each and every one of us should do it. It's not a distant threat from time or space; it's something that's happening right now. We have been supporting this referendum campaign for a year now and it has been very gratifying to see how changes at a political level can be generated from the actions of citizens. The environmental organizations were able to collect more than two million signatures! This has allowed the project to be debated in the Senate and it is awaiting approval. Some of the new articles would say that there will have to be a minimum gratuity for Colombians, that water will be declared a fundamental right not to be privatized and that the government will takes care and conserve its ecosystems.
TLA: The group's music tends to have a political slant. What are your views on Colombia's political situation and the Uribe administration?
HB: It is just a really difficult moment for our country. There are so many issues. Right now, we're experiencing massive indigenous marches throughout Colombia that ask for the treaties to be respected in places where their lands were guaranteed due to the murder of their leaders. At the same time, workers in many sectors are unemployed. The thousands of Colombians that were displaced due to the guerrilla conflict, the army/paramilitary and the networks of corrupt politicians under President Uribe are difficult subjects that need to be resolved too.
TLA: Lastly, a philosophical question: what do you feel is the meaning of life?
HB: Ummm... it can be an experiment for each and every one of us to live a series of experiences that enrich the great mystery that is this existence... that we continue to advance and grow from our mistakes and constantly learn how to be better human beings.

How many times do we have to say it? Aterciopelados might just be the best Latin rock band of all time, but Café Tacvba is around, and so we find it impossible to decide between musical treasures. Andrea Echeverri and Hector Buitrago arrived at the right moment, with one of the most radical visions in the emerge of rock en español, and they keep delivering marvelous pieces into their transcendental discography. Ever since Gozo Poderoso (2001), the duo has taken on a search for bright themes for our earth, accentuating nature and a handful of benefits as a consequence of optimism and positivism. Andrea and Hector released solo albums a few years ago, only to comeback with the amazingly profound Oye! and now Rio , which could be read as an equally vibrant continuation.
Aterciopelados embraces social protestation with their most powerful weapons, their lyrics. Having something to say isn't sufficient to make an artist socially conscious, but these two visionaries manifest their unconditional offerings through deep-felt beautiful poems that happen to be singed and instrumented. Many years of Guerilla resistance have imposed national and individual fear in Colombia, the music of Aterciopelados smoothens the political tension through an auditory war of its own, one of peaceful and cosmic directions. I usually don't tolerate artists exposing their art at maximum zooming (like a photographer chasing a victim of war), even if they are well intentioned, but Aterciopelados has the sensibility to depict reality, contemplate it and provide options to form change.
First single "Rio" asks us to send our rivers some oxygen, to send prayers and hope for the fish to comeback. The song humanizes our rivers and seals a connection between nature and our bodies, both in need of clean waters. The backgrounds are particularly outstanding; Andrea Echeverri and Hector Buitrago are true mavericks of atmospheric sensibility. "Vienen las aguas del rio, corriendo, cantando! por la ciudad van soñando ser limpias, ser claras", one of the great singles of the year. Also astonishing is "28" which shares a lot with "A Eme O" a single from Andrea Echeverri's 2005 solo album. The title of the song refers to the menstrual cycle, "the blood didn't arrive in the 28th day," pregnancy had never been so poetically presented in any song before. For those complaining that their music doesn't evolve just listen to a song like "Vals" or "Ataque de Risa", there is no niche in their music or a comfort zone, just a direction.
They have released a video for "Hijos de Tigre", a song for the film La Milagrosa (Rafa Lara, 2008) about the guerrilla and military repression in their country. "Bandera" is one of the great direct songs on immigration and a strong defensive song on those limiting our path towards our dream. Rio is fun and nostalgic, and in a way a sibling of another record this year, oddly not from a Latino band but from the Fleet Foxes self-titled album (one of the year's ultimate best). Rio is charged with folk and traditional Iberoamerican lyricism that most international media would fail to fully appreciate, but their vision is so wide that the album is not only universally appealing but a charmingly persuasive document of action.
