  • Baaba Maal -International - Remix Competition

Legend of the world music scene Baaba Maal released his new album ‘Television’ this summer.

To celebrate the release, Palm Pictures and Giant Step are launching a competition to find a new, fresh remix of the album’s high-energy track ‘International’.

Baaba sees language as an instrument and he searches for different ways to diversify his music- this newest album ‘Television’ is a collaboration with New York’s Brazilian Girls, who helped him blend West African musical traditions with electronic dance music – so the challenge is to keep the spirit of experimentation and fusion alive to create an innovative remix.

The winning entry will be selected by Baaba Maal himself and the remix will be released on his official website.

    Other prizes include:

    1st Place:
    • $300
    • 8 week electronic music production course
    • Palm Pictures CD/DVD bundle

    2nd Place:
    • 6 week introductory DJ course
    • Palm Pictures CD/DVD bundle

    3rd Place:
    • An online DJ/Production class of your choice
    • Baaba Maal CD and DVD set

So if you’ve got creativity flowing through your veins, and a love of moulding music to make your own, this is it the competition for you.

All remixes should be sent as an MP3 to johan@baabamaal.tv before 12:00 EST on October 22nd 2009. The winner will need to provide Palm Pictures with the aiff/master of the file once selected.

  • G8 Letter Signed by Baaba Maal

This is a letter sent by oxfam to the G8 heads of state and the media urging them to consider their policy on foreign aid.

    June 2009

Group of Eight Heads of State

You have a unique opportunity in Italy this year to ensure that all people, in rich countries and poor, are given the support they need to live decent and dignified lives.

You have taken important steps to this end at previous G8 Summits. In 2001 you acknowledged that industrialized nations had a responsibility to tackle global inequality through deeper debt relief and more aid, and you agreed to establish a Global Fund for HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria. In 2005, you promised to increase annual aid levels to $50bn.

We ask you now to build on these significant commitments next month at the L’Aquila Summit. Do not retreat from them. We hope one day to read in the history books: “The 2009 G8 Summit in Italy was a turning point in the fight against poverty. World leaders stood strong in the face of an economic crisis. They kept their promises to give more development assistance to poor countries and to fight climate change, and they urged other leaders to do the same.”

Today, poor people are being forced to shoulder multiple burdens that are not of their making. The economic crisis is hitting their remittances and investment and trade flows. Climate change is harming their harvests, livelihoods, health and safety. High food and commodity prices are worsening a chronic poverty crisis which continues to claim thousands of lives every day.

You can make health care and education a reality for millions of people if you keep your promise to pay $50 billion in foreign aid. You can improve the lives of millions of people by brokering a safe and fair climate deal to keep global warming below 2°C, by reducing your nations’ emissions and committing at least $150 billion to help developing countries adapt and pursue their own low carbon futures.

The money required is small when compared to recent spending on rescuing banks - but the benefits will make the future a better place for all people. Strike a decisive blow against global poverty next month.

    Signed ....

Rahul Bose, Mary Robinson, Jeremy Hobbs, Bill Nighy, Oumou Sangare, Colin Firth, Annie Lennox, Musimbi Kanyoro, Scarlett Johannson, Angelique Kidjo, Baaba Maal, Emeritus ArchbishopDesmond Tutu, Amadou and Mariam, and Bineta Diop

  • Television Remix Competition - enter now!

Legend of the world music scene Baaba Maal released his new album ‘Television’ earlier this month.

To celebrate the release, Palm Pictures is launching a competition to find a new, fresh remix of the album’s title track.

Baaba sees language as an instrument and he searches for different ways to diversify his music- ‘Television’ sees him working with New York’s Brazilian Girls to blend West African musical traditions with electronic dance music – so the challenge is to use stems of Baaba’s vocals in ‘Television’ as your own instrument to create an innovative and experimental remix.

The winning entry will be selected by Baaba Maal himself and the remix will be released on his official website www.baabamaal.tv. The winner will also receive a prize of £200 for the track and you will be credited with the remix.

So if you’ve got creativity flowing through your veins, and a love of moulding music to make your own, this is it the competition for you.

All remixes should be sent as an MP3 to johan@baabamaal.tv before 12:00 GMT on August 10th 2009. The winner will need to provide Palm Pictures with the aiff/master of the file once selected.
