Built from a mandolin (Liz), a guitar (her twin sister Sarah), and a big emphasis on harmonic female vocals, Because We Can are a Melbourne based alt-country band. Since starting in mid 2004 in the Melbourne music scene, Because We Can have played regularly at venues around Melbourne and Canberra, in the process finding their individual direction and gaining some local radio play. Their sound mixes distinctive originals with popular oldies, and infuses all with engaging vocals and surreal humour. There's a strong sense of updated homage to American roots music, as evidenced in a soul searching trip through the United States in late 2005 including some well received gigs to American audiences.
