""Cop Killer the most controversial track off Body Count's self titled debut. Written by Ice T as a response to police brutality and killings that affected and effected the young rapper turned metal musician while growing up in the projects in south central LA. The song hits you like a freight train filled with high explosives from the outset of the song. The pace is maddening and gives the whole song a whole level of energy that is hard to dispute. Technically speaking its well structured and well timed. The song doesnt grow boring or tedious, you just keep banging you head from start to end waving your middle finger in the air, this is true metal.
One cannot examine the song with out discussing its controversial topic, and indeed it is controversial. In the 90's the police unions had pressured the label Warner Music Group to drop the album or remove the track. Warner surprisingly defended the artist and kept on pressing the album. It was ice T himself who in the end removed the track due to his feelings that the track itself had been overcome with controversy. In an interview, Ice T stated that "I didn't want my band to get pigeon-holed as that's the only reason that record sold." It is truly sad because many people who picked up the record later on, were missing out on the albums best track. The Track Is brilliant the song speaks personally to anyone who has ever had a gun pressed against his skull, harassed or beaten by those who are supposed to serve and protect.
The song is a reaction to a very serious problem in society, the abuse of power by those who should protect us and keep us from harm. I would say to any law enforcement officer who has issue, instead of concerning yourself with the song as its written, focus on the problem of the world where young artists feel the need to create songs like cop killer. Food for thought.""
