C/A/T [pronounced 'cat', like the animal] began in 1998 as a purely experimental project ran solely by Crunch Pod label founder, Ben Arp. Prior to forming C/A/T, Arp had several short-lived projects and also began working as a DJ at radio station KDVS 90.3 FM in Davis, CA. In 2003 Arp relocated to the Seattle, WA area and more or less ceased DJing and all other musical endeavors; save for activities on the Crunch Pod label. The events of 09/11/01 led C/A/T to research and record for 3 years, finally settling on the 4 tracks that found their way onto the WTC EP which was released in late 2004. The EP received a small amount of publicity and became somewhat popular on the West Coast industrial club and radio circuit to the track "Reaction (Official)".
Arp continued on the conspiratorial bent and infused more minimal rhythms to the sound when he approached the 2005 full length release 'The Prisoner'. Based on the television program of the same name, C/A/T took the aesthetic of The Village and updated it to parallel current events some 35+ years after the show's creation. "The Prisoner" built up a more live performance friendly sound, and thusly C/A/T began to play out more, performing with acts like Manufactura, Caustic, Exclipsect and Savak vs. Zymosiz and being featured in the 2005 edition of the Providence Industrial Festival in Providence, Rhode Island.
In the summer of 2005, Arp completely changed the focus of the C/A/T project... and in doing so, added a live member, Kat [no relation to the C/A/T name] and turned towards a more traditional and club friendly sound. These recordings were showcased on "The Rogue Pair" a 12 track CD, 8 original tracks and 4 remixes from Terrorfakt, Manufactura, Caustic and Endif. With tracks like 'Enhancer' and 'A Line In The Sand', C/A/T began to gather more attention on both radio and club playlists. Higher profile live opportunities also began to arise as C/A/T was booked to play alongside such acts as Cervello Elettronico, HMB, Architect, the Combichrist DJ tour and was tapped to perform at the 2006 Reverence Festival in Madison, Wisconsin... along with acts like God Module, Stromkern, Android Lust, Caustic and Null Device to name a few.
Summer 2006 found C/A/T releasing an 8 track, limited edition [666 copies] CD-EP on June 6th, 2006 called ATF. This features alternate versions of tracks like 'Enhancer' and 'A Line In The Sand', remixes from Caustic and Terrorfakt, and 3 brand new original tracks. C/A/T followed the success of the ATF EP with many live performances, including the previously mentioned Reverence Festival in Madison, WI, the Indoctrination Festival in Chicago, IL and the C.O.M.A. 4 festival in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
A new album, "Point Of No Return" surfaced in June of 2007. Around the time of the release of the album, C/A/T parted ways with previous live member Malice (now of the band 'Projekt Malice') prior to embarking on a short U.S. tour to support the release. "Point Of No Return" served as a departure from previous C/A/T releases as the album featured vocals on several tracks and only retained the "ATF" style on a few tracks (namely new mixes of "(We Make) Music To Piss You Off" and "Smashed"). Due to the departure of Malice, Arp split the tour dates with either Kat or Glytch as the backing member. After returning from the road, Arp ceased working with Glytch and retained 100% sole control of C/A/T and began work on a new EP called "This Season Of Chaos". The new EP will serve as a "end of the beginning" of C/A/T and will feature new material as well as remixed and reworked versions of old tracks.
In October 2007, Arp announced that the next full length C/A/T album is still set for release in 2008 and is currently untitled. He is also starting a new side project called "51X" will will retain the "instrumental hard club" sound of C/A/T (ie. Smashed, Malice, We Make Music To Piss You Off) while C/A/T will now be entirely directed towards vocal based "industrial/EBM" styled music.
