  • New songs at thesixtyone

There's so much going on, I don't have time to write about it. My Odd Year collaboration "Waiting in the Wings" is done. You can hear the whole song on thesixtyone [http://www.thesixtyone.com/theoddyear/song/64528/. My publisher is interested in seeking TV/film placements for the song. We'll see what happens. I also posted "Our Shadow," the closer from my latest album, on my t61 page [http://www.thesixtyone.com/colortheory/song/Our+Shadow/65170/. More soon, promise.

  • The last Color Theory t-shirt

I never much cared for being in the "merch" business. It's one thing to sell CDs. I'm a recording artist after all. They're small, so I can ship all but the largest orders from home. T-shirts are a different story. They demand a separate Tyvek mailer, and post-9/11, a trip to the post office, plus a customs form for international orders. While it's cool to think that someone in Russia is walking around in a Color Theory t-shirt (thanks Denis!), on the whole it's more trouble than it's worth.

Will there ever be another Color Theory t-shirt? Maybe, if someone comes up with a really cool design. Even then, I'll sell them through another site that makes shirts individually as orders come in. It'll be convenient (for me anyway), but not cheap. What I'm getting at is, if you ever wanted a Color Theory t-shirt, now's the time. Get them here.

  • My Dad's favorite Color Theory song

It's "I Stand By My Mistakes" from The Thought Chapter. He likes that my wife Michelle sings it with me. I suppose it's technically a duet. If he harbors any cognitive dissonance due to the melancholy nature of the lyrics, I don't detect it. My songs aren't meant to be autobiographical anyway, so don't read too much into it. This one is light on synths, being one of the handful of CT songs to feature guitars. One doesn't have to be an electronic music fan to appreciate it.

I mention this because Microsoft has made the song available for free - no sign up required. Not only that, but they're paying me 50¢ for each unique download. Even if you've already got the album, I'd appreciate it if you'd take a moment to download it here:

Who knows? Maybe your Dad will like it too.

  • In-depth interview with Brian Hazard

GarageSpin posted an in-depth interview with Brian Hazard of Color Theory this morning. Topics include songwriting, mastering, gear, and crazy promotional stunts, including a series of personal ads he placed in the Los Angeles Times. You can read it here.

  • Early Christmas at the Hazard household

Thankfully, things have slowed down since voting for the Lennon contest ended. After six months of solid promotion, I'm itching to record new material. I'm learning Ableton Live and assembling a "palette" of gear for my next project. I'm seriously considering doing it all with one synth: u-he's Zebra, plus maybe something else for drums. I did three albums with just my old Yamaha An1x, so why not?

Remember a few months back when I asked for your input regarding the direction of the next album? Most of you encouraged me to model early Vince Clarke, but that idea doesn't excite me anymore (sorry). I'm envisioning something lush and spacious with intertwined melodies that play off each other and develop over the course of a song. Something fresh, not hip like MGMT or M83 or Justice, but not purposely retro. Of course, my top-level goal is always to make great songs with clear structures. No need to worry that I'll go all "experimental" on you.

If you haven't checked out the web site lately, take a look! There's lots of new stuff, including three instrumental edits I prepared for film/TV use, and a detailed rundown of the prizes I've received so far from the Lennon contest. If you don't want to miss anything, subscribe to the RSS feed or site updates by email.

Thanks, as always, for being a fan!
