Born in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire 1998, Asad (DJ Surge-N) has always enjoyed music since a kid and was always very interested in the different versions of a song that were made available to consumers on various media formats such as CD's and Cassettes and more recently Vinyl Records. So interested in fact that he wanted to buy a CD single (even ones that he didn't like) if they had remixes of the original track on them. Not surprisingly, he still does the same today! There has always been something about remixes that he's liked and has enjoyed them since the young age of 12. Unusually, since the release of Britney Spears' "(You Drive Me) Crazy (The Stop Remix!)" in 1997, he became increasingly interested in the way videos were made by many artists, and why their song in their corresponding videos were different to the versions on the album, like 'crazy'. He was also interested in songs that recieved radio airplay that differed from their corresponding album and/or single tracks whether it be differences in duration or mixing. By 1998, he began making his own simple little edits (which, he claims, were absolutely terrible) when he was in Primary school. But in that same year, his to-be brother sadly died in what was reported as a 'still-birth'. As a result of the tragedy, the atmosphere within his household turned sombre. He changed. Music was the only thing that he could turn to in an effort to forget about things and relax. As a result, music became an obsession and took him away on a journey he'd never forget. The year 2001 was a new beginning for me as his now six year old sister, Anya Musqaan was born, and he moved to Motherwell, Scotland. It was here in Motherwell where he was given some pro audio editing equipment and began experimenting for those years he lived in Scotland. It always kept him occupied. It wasn't until he came to live in Auckland, New Zealand that his music editing/mixing skills became so much better than what they used to be. It was in New Zealand he became DJ Surge-N - Not a live club DJ, just an 'in-home' DJ/producer - and that is what people online, and in reality came to know him by. He is into house, club, pop and rock music generally. In November of 2004, he created one of his first projects using the editing skills he gained over the years. This project was called 'Tick-Toxic' and made a short, yet extremely successful, debut on the internet in January/February 2005 (the track can be heard on this page). It was played on a radio station in New Zealand, and there were huge downloads for the track largely from fansites of the two artists involved (Britney Spears and Gwen Stefani). A video he made for the track made a very short debut on the internet, and the feedback he recieved was generally very positive. The 'Tick-Toxic' video finally made a proper 'debut' in late 2006. The number of people viewing the video has been increasing rapidly everyday since February 2007 and has past the half million mark! Viewers have shown their enthusiasm for the track with fantastic comments, ratings, and subscriptions recieved from the video on YouTube, as well as here on MySpace and also Bebo. One particular youtube member was so enthusiastic that she was eager to send a donation to get her hands on a copy of a CD containing various mixes of the track. Now Asad has people requesting to purchase it, download it and put it onto their iPods everyday. It's just fantastic to hear that people love this mix. He would never have imagined how much of an impact it would make with the online community. Between the years of 2005 and 2007, he produced a lot more mash-ups and remixes, most of which are unreleased. He plans to release these in the near future on a website he's interested in developing, including MySpace (check my events section for details) but currently he's sending promo discs of 'Tick-Toxic' to various radio stations and clubs around New Zealand and now is becoming a favourite in many places. Apart from his music life, Asad is currently studying BSc (Biomedical Sciences) at the University of Auckland. He aims to release more great remixes in the future. You can expect to be hearing a lot new material from him coming your way soon.
