"... when I was a kid, I would spend practically the entire summer outside (this was before video games) playing baseball (and wiffle ball) and tennis... the scent of fresh-cut grass, grape Kool-Aid, barbecue grills and sunshine... warm and tart green apples stolen from some neighbor's tree... I always hated for summer to end, and as autumn and the new school year would approach I would get a tiny little sick feeling deep in my stomach... as I got older, summer's end would mean other things, the parting with friends, perhaps the end of a summer relationship... anyway, this time of year has always been a time of some things ending and others beginning... i still feel a bit sad when summer ends even though there is usually an excitement about what lies ahead as well... this song captures that feeling and those emotions better than any song i've ever heard... the images that the lyrics evoke are powerful to me... the second verse about the neighbor girl who falls in love knowing that her lover will be leaving her at the end of summer gets me every time... it's just a beautiful song and it's beautifully sung as well...
