y name is David Ruffin Jr., and I grew up standing in the shadows of the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers, which connect two of the greatest roaring, and raging rivers with combined elements of blues, gospel, swing, and pop – thumping beats for a new dance that was instantly recognized. I grew up between Lake Erie and Lake Huron, who had enough energy to power a diesel engine. The Temptations and the Four Tops were pop music’s masters of soulful serenade. I grew up watching the Gemini Twins’ (my Father’s and Eddie Kendrick’s) never out of step choreograph, perfect harmony, and stylish suits – become an avalanche of hits. Those were the sound tracks of my life. It set ablaze a web of fire and emotion in the small doe-eyed boy sitting against the roaring lions that tore at the yowling crooners in pleasant pain and steered him toward the drippy, southern flow of Ruffinism (Ruffin/Kendrick flavor, with a new school twist).
Opportunity came knocking while collaborating with these stellar artists: Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Kurpurt, Daz, Nate Dogg (A Smoove tone having mopho), Sisquo and Jazz of Dru Hill, Roscoe, Benzino, Dave Cochran DCX- (Mr. Sax Sex), VNMG (Platinum Production!!), and Capone! I also worked with local Detroit talents such as T. BASS Green (Platinum Bass Lix for Dayz), G-Dukes, Proof (R.I.P. Lil bro), 2WiseMen (Underground Kingz), Dave Mays, Amir, Young Ruff (My knuckle-head, HOT ON THE MIC Nephew), The Boss and Diamond (Under-rated MC). Women pulled their hair out when collaboration with the legendary singing power-house, The Dramatics, mesmerized, electrified, and tantalized the ladies!
In the past years, highly touted music publications such as The Rolling Stone, The Source and Rap Pages have labeled Ruffinism as "talented and up-and-coming". The most thrilling moment in music came when fans heard the worldwide, multi-platinum song “Gin & Juice.” A Hip-Hop Classic now for the sweaty, summer-night, bouncy ride, with the fellas; sipping on gin & juice! A song that Dr. Dre, T-Green, Snoop, and I collaborated on and recorded together. Recently flying the coop and relocating to Los Angeles in an attempt to get some recognition for the latest development; a sound that is soulful, energetic and swooning R & B listeners, First Night together!
In addition to singing, the acting bug came a calling! Blessed to appear as a lead singer, and belting out sultry lyrics in the national hit stage play, "All Men Can’t Be Dogs" (2004-05), fans went wild. Rave reviews were bestowed upon this collective effort: "P.M.S”. – “Power, Money, and Sex” in 2004.” Want to see more?
As of 08, I have 15 songs ready and 22 independent recordings over the last four years, (twelve in the last 9 months) and came up with some new FIRE. As of recent, I'm going into a joint production with Doc Ross of Hidden Beach's "UNWRAPPED", to do 5 new songs by spring.
A solo CD project is what’s most important to me right now. I have pieced together a new demonstration/production with Victor Grimlock Newman of H.I.P./Win-Win Production and with other such as, Jay-Fingers, DCX, MEECH on Skins in hopes of a first or second quarter 2008 debut. I am looking forward to music collaborations with a few of my favorites as well. If you have any Duet ideas, speak on it!
