  • I Seem To Have An Effect On Guitarists...

...I seem to make them break guitar strings.

This is the 3rd guitarist who has broken a string during an acoustic show with me, and all of them said it was the first time that it happened to them.

Such was the case tonight (10/26) with Kohei (pronounced koh-hey) at our Apple Store gig. The string broke toward the end of the 3rd song in the set (he overcame the handicap pretty well to finish out the song, I must say). As I was singing, I heard a big "pop!" I didn't even have to look at him; I already knew what that POP was.

(The enclosed pic is AFTER he'd restrung.)

The last time this happened to me (different guitarist), I was sitting there, minding my own business and waiting for the intro to end so I could start singing. POP. A broken end of the string whipped me in the arm, and it kinda hurt.

(BTW, I don't get mad about these things; they give me some time to rest my voice between songs. And I love bloopers.)

Breaking a string was new to Kohei, so he didn't bring a backup guitar, nor did he bring extra strings to the stage area with him. A friend ran upstairs to the back of the store (the waiting room, where all our stuff was) to get his extra pack. So I had to make LONG small talk.

I laughed my way through it, and it went ok.

But I wonder - WHY do I seem to jinx these poor guitarists in my life?

All I can say is, they just get SOOOOO excited playing with MOI, that they just smash the hell out of their poor guitar strings. What else could it possibly be? :-)

Kohei has learned a valuable lesson tonight: he must ALWAYS keep an extra set of strings WITHIN ARM'S REACH when he plays with DAVINA. 'Cuz ANYTHING can happen...

  • The Acoustic Mini-Tour of L.A.

    Progress Report 2.

9 dates, 12 days. Ahhhhhhhh, lovely. Feeling like a rock star. Adrenaline is high. Rehearsals have begun. Can't wait to get there. Hope I don't get lost driving around. Toni Koch (TK Promo), once again, thanks so much for the clincher at Tangier.

Been watching as many TV shows & movies with L.A. locales, to get a feel for the place. Been reading Slash's book, "Slash" & taking notes on places mentioned. Lots of places I'd like to see, but not sure if I'll have the time or energy. :-)

Will definitely get there a couple days earlier & stay a couple days later than originally planned. Get to know the place a bit.

Suddenly remembering the theme to The Beverly Hillbillies. Will need to rewrite for jaded east coast chick. Goin' to Cali....

  • The Acoustic Mini-Tour of L.A.

    Progress Report 1.

We're up to 5 dates now. Workin' hard, people. I now LIVE in front of my MacBook, trying to find showcases & venues that will take a chance on this chick, who's playing in L.A. for the first time. I appreciate the help & support of many GoGirls (including Madalyn herself), Toni Koch (TK Promo) and Jimi Yamagishi for taking the time to write with advice and suggestions. And thanks to the venues and promoters who've booked me so far

Guitarist Kohei says he wants to play every night for the 2 weeks we're there. lol. I'm working on getting as many dates as possible, and waiting to hear from more venues and promoters.

I guess I won't be doing much sightseeing in L.A.
