Founded in 1984 by Bart van Rixel and Remco Bouwens after Bart was kicked out of Hammerhawk. Soon Simon and Harm joined the band and we recorded our demo "Tales of the unexpected". The following 2 years we played a lot across the Netherlands and many obscure labels wanted to sign us. This resulted in a deal with "Metalloid", but after the release of Martyr's album this label didn't have the money to release Defender so we were back at the beginning. In 1986 we financed studio time and recorded "City ad mortis", which was released in 1987 at CBS-records. Again a lot of gigs and many positive reviews followed, but CBS-records didn't want to make a full album with us. In 1989 we recorded our promo-single "Journey to the unexpected" in order to get another deal. It didn't work out the way we expected and parted ways in 1990. In 2001 Defender released a compilation album "Remaining Tales and in 2006 "City ad mortis" has been re-released as a part of the "Dutch metal cult series" at Rusty Cage Records.
