Dec 28, 08:54 AMVic Chesnutt - RIPVIC CHESNUTT RIP
My beloved town is heartbroken this holiday upon losing Vic Chesnutt on Xmas morning.
Vic was a friend and absolutely the greatest writer I ever knew. Bar none.
His songs will be studied in Universities as fine southern literature. (Perhaps they already are).
I've lost way too many friends this year and losing Vic here at the tail end was a crappy capper.
(I think Vic would like hearing those two words used next to each other).
I have a lot to write about this year and will do so as soon as I can compose some thoughts, but not tonight.
Tonight is for drinking some wine (spodeeodee), smoking a fatty (as Vic was prone to say) and listening to some of the most beautiful songs ever written.
I do highly encourage you to read the following words from some folks who knew and loved him and who have articulated things better than I can right now.
I also encourage you to take to heart the parts about Vic's horrific medical debts and do what you can to help (both financially and politically).
If you haven't already, I also highly encourage you to seek out some of Vic's records. His last one (At The Cut) is as good as anything you'll hear.
I'm signing off for now but will resume very soon.
Much Love from Athens Georgia.

Dec 10, 07:49 AMDrive-By Truckers Sign to ATO Records, Release New AlbumDRIVE-BY TRUCKERS SIGN TO ATO RECORDS, RELEASE NEW ALBUM
"Drive-By Truckers are the best rock band in America." CNN.com
New York, NY-ATO Records is pleased to announce the signing of Drive-By Truckers and their label debut, The Big To-Do. The album, which will be the band's tenth in their thirteen-year career, is scheduled to be released March 16, 2010. The Big To-Do features thirteen new tracks from the Drive-By Truckers and was produced by their long time producer, David Barbe (Sugar, Bettye LaVette). "It's very much a rock album," says Patterson Hood of the Trucker's upcoming release. "Very melodic and more rocking than anything we've done since disc 2 of Southern Rock Opera."
The inspiration for The Big To-Do came to the band during their time on the road. "We've often set our songs and albums in different periods of time, but this one finds us directly in our present. Riding all through the highways of America (and Europe) trying to make sense of a very different world than the one we grew up in," says Hood. "I don't write a lot of songs on the road, but I did more than usual on this album and many more were inspired by or set there, either in a literal sense or something I witnessed or heard about while I was out there."
Hood and Mike Cooley continue to be the chief songwriters of the group, continuing a musical partnership that has lasted over twenty-three years. Bassist, Shonna Tucker, flexes her songwriting muscles once again by contributing two original songs to the album. Brad Morgan (drums), John Neff (guitar/pedal steel) and Jay Gonzalez (keyboards) round out the current Drive-By Truckers lineup.
The band recently backed legendary R&B musician, Booker T. Jones, on his critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated album, Potato Hole. The album is nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Album and Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
The Drive-By Truckers will be hitting the road at the beginning of the new year. A full tour supporting The Big To-Do will be announced in early 2010.

Nov 19, 08:05 AMVINYL Release of Eddie Hinton Tribute 45'sY'ALL:
We're pleased to be part of Shake It Records' Eddie Hinton Tribute 45 Series. (Dangerous Highway).
For more information on Dangerous Highway: A Tribute to the songs of Eddie Hinton
Vol. 2: Drive-By Truckers (Where's Eddie / Everybody Needs Love)
check out www.shakeitrecords.comEddie was a long time resident of my hometown and a big part of the Muscle Shoals recording legacy.
He was the artist our band collectively loves most.
The series is largely to raise awareness of Eddie's incredible musical legacy.
It is also to raise awareness of the fact that vinyl does still exist (and in fact is one of the few sectors of the troubled music industry that is actually growing). The series' vinyl only release plan also enabled the man who put it all together to reach across record company lines and get artists whose labels might have otherwise objected to their recording independently.
(It is much easier to get permission and avoid a lot of legal paper work if the label is told that this is a vinyl only release).
There has been some bellyaching and complaining but I feel that the point is being missed.
'Guess what? You can actually still buy a turntable. You might be amazed how inexpensive a good turntable is.
I bought my Stanton T.90 for less than $300 and it has a USB port to download onto my iPod (although being in my 40s, I haven't figured out how to do that yet).
Cooley doesn't own a iPod or computer so he opted for the lesser expensive, but still high quality Stanton without the USB port. I think it was in the $200 range and sounds fantastic.I bought my wife a small record player, like the ones they had in school when we were kids, for $50 and it plays 33, 45, and 78s and actually sounds pretty good.
Once you own a turntable, you'll be amazed at the fun you can have going out and buying really cool records really cheaply. It starts out as a hobby and can quickly become a passion or obsession.
Some older records may have some pops and scratches, but they also have great bass (much better than CDs) and there is nothing like the fun of spending an evening playing records for your friends. We often have a turntable on the bus and take turns DJing and prowling local record stores for cool cheap vinyl.
(Buying vinyl also means more support for the locally owned record retailers, which are far superior to the mass market chains and NEED OUR SUPPORT!)
New records are often of a much higher quality than the records we bought as kids.
All of our vinyl releases are on 180gm vinyl which sound amazing. We spare no expense in our packaging and mastering and our vinyl releases are the best sounding DBT releases available.(Plus the packaging is much nicer).
Our next album will be released on vinyl with a CD included for downloading and mobility purposes.
(I released Murdering Oscar that way and nearly 1 out of 4 sales were in that format).
We took part in this project to urge folks to buy vinyl and support this superior aspect of the recording industry.
I ordered my turntable online and it was delivered within 5 days (with cartridge and stylus included).
So get with it and get to spinning them records.
It may be the best investment you make all year.
(Ask Santa!)Yours, lovingly spinning at 45RPMs,

Nov 17, 09:12 AM40 Watt Hotel Info - Note from PattersonY'ALL:Just a reminder that tickets are now on sale for our annual Athens GA 40 WattHomecoming / Nuci's Space Benefit Weekend. The dates are Thursday Jan 14 for the Nuci's Space Show / Friday and Saturday Jan 15 and 16 for the 40 Watt Weekend. We are also selling a limited number of Three Night Passes that get you into all three for a reduced price.Topping last year's event will be a tough challenge, but I think we are going to.The opening act for the weekend is none other that Muscle Shoals Alabama's own The Decoys. They are a bunch of veteran musicians from my hometown's legendary studio scene featuring my Dad, David Hood on bass.A lot of the songs they play sound like covers, except that some of them actually play on the original versions. They are also a kickass live band (ask anyone who saw them open for us at The Shoals Theatre this summer) and it should be a very special event. This is their first time playing in Athens and if I'm not mistaken the first time my Dad has played live here since around 1964 or so.We also hope to get Dad to come up and play a few with us too so it will be a very special weekend. For the Nuci Space Benefit we have a 3 band bill featuring Athens' own Bloodkin, hot off of touring behind their fantastic new album "Baby They Told Us We Would Rise Again" (which will definitely be in my TOP TEN this year) and The Camp Amped All Stars which is comprised of members of the annual Camp Amped Summer Rock and Roll Camp that Nuci's Space has every year. Camp Amped is an amazing program set up for young Rockers (aged 13 - 19) and we'll kick off our benefit by showing off a little of what they can do.Expect a very special evening. In order to make travel to Athens for the upcoming rock shows at the 40 Watt easier for our fans we have negotiated discounted rates at the Hotel Indigo and Courtyard Marriott. Call soon to take advantage of these special rates which are available for the nights of Jan 14, 15 & 16.Hotel Indigo - $109706-546-0430When calling, please use the CODE: DBT or Drive By Truckers to receive the discounted rate for this weekend, you must book by Dec 14Courtyard - $79706-369-7000When calling, please use the CODE: MHTT or Drive By Truckers to receive the discounted rate for this weekend, you must book by Dec 23.Our new album will be coming out in early 2010 (details coming very soon) so expect to see some world premiere songs as well as some old faves.Stay tuned for more details as they get put together and plan on coming down (or up) to Athens for an amazing weekend that promises to be our best yet.In more immediate news, I am playing four more solo shows in the next 2 weeks. Wednesday will be my 3rd and final Caledonia Residency show. I have had a blast doing this and we plan to end it all with a big bang. This week's show will feature The Belvederes (David Barbe, John Neff, EZB, Jay Gonzalez and myself) doing the Murdering Oscar set. The band is amazing and it should be the perfect end to a fantastic run.I will be playing Friday in Thomaston GA and Saturday in Atlanta GA. Jay Gonzalez will be accompanying me on those shows. Finally, I will be playing a rare solo show in Florence AL the evening before Thanksgiving at The Zodiac Theatre. It is a tiny venue and should be a very special night of music. Get your tickets early because it will sell out.Keep an eye out on our various sites for lots of breaking news coming.See you out there soon.Safe Travels,Patterson Hood -

Nov 04, 10:11 AMWords from the Hood - 11/4/09Y'ALL:
Decompressing from our late October run.
Very happy with the shows on all levels.
Don't think the band has ever played better than we have in the last six months.
As we are winding down The Righteous Path Tour of shows and starting to gear up for next years' new releases and tours, we are all very excited about what we did this year in the studio and out on the road and really fired up about going out and playing these new songs next year.
This month, the band is tying up some loose ends and starting our preparations for next year.
We are about to announce our annual Athens GA / 40 Watt Homecoming Shows and annual Nuci's Space Benefit.
I'll go ahead and spill a few of the beans to Y'all now:
The weekend will be Jan. 14th - 16th.
We will be announcing when ticket sales begin in the next week or so as well as details like support and other related events.
This past year, all three nights sold out and we raised a ton of money for Nuci's.
We're going to have to dig deep to top it but I feel confident we will.
I'm playing a small handful of solo dates this month.
Starting tonight, I'll be doing a Wednesday night residency at The Caledonia Lounge here in Athens.
I'm playing 3 Wednesdays in a row, with 3 different lineups, and 3 very different approaches and set lists.
Tonight it is me and Jay Gonzalez playing a stripped down set of piano, organ and Wurlitzer, guitar and two-part harmony.
The songs will tend to veer towards the more outre' ends of my catalog with some very rare rarities and some world premiere new ones.
We practiced yesterday and I tell you it's gonna be a good one.
Jay will be playing an opening set on his own and that's something great to behold.
Next week, (Nov. 11) I'll be hitting the more country influenced songs in my catalog accompanied by John Neff and Brad Morgan.
This is essentially the core band of the majority of solo shows I played from 2003-2007.
Again, expect some golden rarities and some premieres.
Athens' own Bo Beddingfield will open and he's fantastic.
The third week (Nov. 18) I'll be bringing the Murdering Oscar show to town.
I'll be playing with The Belvederes (John Neff, David Barbe, Jay Gonzalez and Brad Morgan) we'll be reprising some of the fine times I had this summer doing the Screwtopian Tour.
David Barbe and The Quick Hooks will open the Nov. 18 show. They are as good as any band you will ever see.
I also have solo shows in Thomaston GA, Atlanta GA, and a hometown show in Florence AL on the night before Thanksgiving.
Tickets are on sale for all three of these now and as they are in small venues, they should all sell out so get on it.
BTW: Congrats to Will Johnson, who is out drumming for The Monsters Of Folk this fall. KICKASS!!!)
THAT EVENING SUN is an amazing movie written and directed by Scott Teems.
It has been winning festivals all over the country and getting rave reviews for it's writing, directing and Hal Holbrook's amazing performance.
Our friend Ray McKinnon (The Accountant, Crystal) co-produced and plays a very large supporting role in it.
I contributed 2 songs to the soundtrack and am honored to be a small part of such an astounding film.
It opens this friday in NYC with more cities to be announced soon.
THAT EVENING SUN
WHEN: Starting Friday, November 6, 2009
WHERE: City Cinemas 123 on the Upper East Side -- 1001 Third Ave (@ 60th St.), New York, NY 10022
TICKETS: Purchase through www.fandango.com (or 1-800-FANDANGO Code #2705 )As usual, the DBT Store is open and we have some new merch items working it to pry you away from your hard earned cash.
We also have a new DBT iPhone App that is available HERE.
Finally, since we're winding down our year (and gearing up for next) I will leave you with a few parting thoughts.
It's been a crazy whirlwind of a year. DBT hasn't played as many shows as we have most of the last twelve years, but we've still zig zagged around the country three times plus we toured Australia for the first time.
We released 4 albums (Booker T's ‘Potato Hole’ / my ‘Murdering Oscar’ album / DBT's ‘Live in Austin (ACL)’ DVD and CD / and ‘The Fine Print’) and played some wonderful shows with Booker.
I toured with The Screwtopians and got to perform at Madison Square Garden at Pete Seeger's 90th Birthday Bash.
I had a baby boy and DBT made a great album (as good as anything we've ever done). Look for release info in the not too distant future.
This band has been down some pretty rough roads but persevered and I feel so blessed to still be able to do what I love with my best friends.
Some folks say our songs are dark and depressing, but to me they are a joyous noise.
The blues has always been about taking your problems and turning them into something you can dance to, drink to and fuck to.
We're certainly not a blues band in any kind of purest sense, but to me Rock and Roll has always had it's roots in that tradition.
My musical tastes are eclectic to a fault, but most of the music I've loved the most comes from that common ground.
We get to support our families by doing what we love best. We try to earn that each and every night.
Our band has never believed in throwaway nights and we treat each show like it could be the last one we'll ever get to play.
One night it will be and I'd hate for it to not be glorious.
FINALLY: Happy belated Birthday to Traci, who has just completed her tenth year of working for us.
Ten fucking years of putting up with our sorry asses and we forget her birthday. Jeez!
We'll make it up to you yet, I swear.
And THANKS to Jenn for coming down to New Orleans and making us all into Ace Frehleys.
I didn't see KISS at Voodoofest (but I sure saw George Clinton) but Ace was always all of us' favorite.
Have safe travels and a safe holiday season.
See you at The Big To-Do.

Nov 03, 07:51 AM50 Best Album of the Decade - 2000-2009 - Paste Magazine27. Drive-By Truckers: Decoration Day [New West] (2003)
On DBT's 2001 breakthrough double album Southern Rock Opera, the band traded its alt-country "Redneck Underground" approach for a Skynyrd-meets-Crazy-Horse vibe. And on the more concise follow-up, Decoration Day, the Truckers distilled their new sound from 80 to 100 proof. Start to finish, every cut on this gritty, unapologetic, punk-tinged roots-rock record is a classic, as master storytellers Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley unravel one tragic, chilling small-town Southern yarn after another. With tunes like "Sink Hole" (based on Ray McKinnon's Oscar-winning short film, The Accountant), the unflinchingly honest rocker "Marry Me," "My Sweet Annette" (with its jilted title character), the and heart-crushing divorce ballad "Sounds Better in the Song," the caliber of songwriting went through the roof like a shotgun blast. And that's without even mentioning the debut of the Truckers' secret weapon during this period-then-24-year-old singer/guitarist Jason Isbell, whose blistering leads and slide work gave the band a shot in the arm, as did the epic pair of tracks he contributed to the record: father-to-son ballad "Outfit" and the title song, with its bloody Hatfields and McCoys-style family feud. The Truckers have never been more themselves than they were on Decoration Day, and they've never been better. Steve LaBate
