  • 1/7 - Ready For Change In '09?

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION  Grammy Category 108

For those of you voting NARAS members wondering how to distribute your precious remaining votes, may we direct your attention down to the bottom of the categories list  waaaay down... keep going, a little further down, past the"Best Mime / Ventriliquist Collaboration"... past"Best Engineer's Madonna Anecdotes", a little further... Category 108 (out of 110)  BEST CLASSICAL CROSSOVER RECORD. There.

So... what IS this Classical Crossover category? That's an excellent question  one that no one has a definitive answer to, including (especially) the people that came up with the term. Skeptics and cynics might define it as a genre invented by labels attempting to reach a broader audience and record buying base for their classical artists (classical records account for, what? 3-4% of record sales). Slap a beat under a few well known orchestral or opera themes, hand pick some camera friendly youngsters, take them shopping to Club Monacco, and voila  the Twelve Tasmanian Tenors are born. (note to self  great idea for next project)

While this may be true in some cases (NOT, however, in this year's nominees, thankfully), Classical Crossover is MORE than that. Has anyone ever thought that perhaps ROCK musicians want to"cross over" to a SMALLER audience and record buying base? This is the case for EAST VILLAGE OPERA COMPANY. Tired of huge and dangerous youthful crowds at shows, sick of hearing their music played on the radio, frightened by the fiscal responsibilities that come with good incomes, and highly suspicious of the preferential treatment received at popular restaurants, the group boldly stepped out of the mainstream and into a marginal market with their Grammy nominated record"Olde School." It's a joyous mash-up of Opera and Rock, not unlike that beautiful"Getz/Gilberto" mash-up of Bossa Nova and Jazz, which I would also offer up as an example of the kind of crossover we can ALL believe in.

Are YOU ready for change we can ALL believe in for 2009? Red AND Blue, Old AND Young, Rock AND Opera? Then please take the time to VOTE this year.

Category 108  East Village Opera Company

Thank you. Please pass along this message of HOPE to other troubled NARAS voters.

  • 12/4 - Grammy Nomination!!!

    GRAMMY NOMINATION !!!

We were pleased and surprised to hear about the Grammy nomination for "Best Classical Crossover Album" for our record "Olde School." We didn't actually know there was a "Classical Crossover" category (it's #108, way down the list after "Best Tejano / Spoken Word Collaboration - Solo" and right before "Best Catered Recording Session - Ethnic Food"). We're still not sure what the term "Classical Crossover" means. I always thought it was a signature Magic Johnson move until Decca told us our record had landed on the Classical Crossover Chart - right there before "The Twelve Tasmanian Tenors" and after the eight "Il Divo" albums in the first eight spots. Nevertheless, we will ride it for all its worth.

Tune into the broadcast on February 8. I'll be the one kissing Gwen Stefani every time a winner is announced - whether she's nominated or not.

    Much love,

    Peter Kiesewalter

  • 11/25 - Note from Peter

    Hey folks!!!

We've just gotten back from a lengthy tour which has seen us out since September 17, playing 36 shows across the country with quick stops in Canada and Mexico thrown in to make things interesting. It's been an incredible experience, one which I hope to never repeat...ha! But seriously, there is NOTHING like playing every night with great friends - the music evolved from concentrated effort to second nature, like breathing or drinking bourbon.

We're doing one last show in NYC this Saturday November 29 at the Blender Theater. Hopefully it will represent what we've been sounding like in the last two months and make up for the Lincoln Center Concert for Rain back in August. My keytar playing has come leaps and bounds - I am no longer shackled by the 80's conventions which initially restricted my playing to synth brass stabs and FM doorbell chimes. I'm approaching legitimate Chick Corea territory now and I'm seriously thinking of changing my entry in the union phone book to "Kiesewalter, Peter - Keytar." Period.

This is our last NYC show for a while. We'll be concentrating our efforts next year on the lucrative Canadian Prairies market and figuring out how we can bring a choir on the road with us... in a van...

    Have a great Thanksgiving!!

    Much love,

    Peter

    Hello Friends!!!

Just a reminder that East Village Opera Company is making their ONLY Canadian stop of this tour on:

    Saturday November 8 / 8pm at Centrepointe Theatre / 613-580-2700

This is the official release event for their new album Olde School which has been garnering rave reviews in the past few weeks -

“What fresh hell is this? The nu-opera troupe (including Canadian Tyley Ross) runs themes from Wagner's Ring Cycle through a Queenomatic, popaholic, trashophagic demolition machine, and comes up with the most radioactive remake I've ever heard. You've been warned.” – The Toronto Globe and Mail

"Mr. Kiesewalter's arrangements on Olde School include straight-faced (well, not quite) references to everyone from Led Zeppelin, Elton John, and Kool & the Gang, even while they pay respectful homage to the source material, which this time out includes works by Wagner, Handel, Bach, and Puccini, among others." - Canada Watch

“Pop-infused, hard-hitting arrangements of arias and ensembles from classic operas. The group has won fans among both opera buffs and rockers.” New York Times
