I've tried really hard to like The Editors; I studiously listened to them every day for about 2 weeks and then I got on with playing music that I wanted to hear. It's not that I dislike The Editors it's just that the music is so bland, the aural equivalent of beige wall-paper. Having taken it out of the CD player I'm struggling to remember a single song; there are no fragments of melody ringing in my head; no choruses that I repeat to myself. Looking at the song titles again prior to writing this I can't remember a thing about the songs, not even the much praised singles.
I got nothing from The Editors except a small hole in my bank balance. As for the Joy Division comparisons I'm sure if Ian Curtis were alive he'd reject more melodic songs than The Editors have released here.
Last week I saw "An End Has a Start" on sale at a petrol station counter which must say something about the record company's marketing drive if they're positioning it alongside the "pop idol" type crud and hands-free kits that are usually vying for your attention when you pay for petrol. A word of warning though, if you buy it for the car you'll either be distracted by the mesmerising quality that other people heap upon this band or you'll be asleep at the wheel.
The Editors are Coldplay minus the ability to write a whole tune. Joy Divsion without the talent. Bland and vapid, they have nothing of consequence to say, no style and no soul. If you're not the sort of person who's happy to listen to dross, do yourself a favour and run a mile from The Editors and their insipid, lifeless dirge.
