May 26, 07:55 AMNew Elvis Remix to Be Released May 27
Below is an excerpt from a Q & A we did with DJ Spankox, who is responsible for the next big Elvis remix, "Baby Let's Play House." The song will be available from all major digital download services beginning May 27, as well as on CD exclusively at Graceland and on ShopElvis.com. The rest of the Q & A will be published in the Summer 2008 Elvis Insiders newsletter, due to hit homes in mid-to-late July. If you are not already an Elvis Insider, you can join now to receive access to the members-only website, chat room and message board, as well as discounts at Graceland, Heartbreak Hotel, and on ShopElvis.com.
Q – Could you tell us something about Spankox?
My name is Agostino Carollo. I'm a composer, record producer and DJ from Italy. I'm signed to EMI Music in Germany and to Universal Music Publishing in Italy. I approached music studying the violin since I was 6 for 10 years. At the age of 11 I wrote my first song. I graduated in Arts and my specialization is Rock Music. I released so far four albums and various singles under the names X-Treme, Eyes Cream, Ago and Spankox. I received a few gold records for some of my songs like "Love Song" (Top 10 around Europe and also covered by the band Right Said Fred in 2002), "Fly Away" (#1 in the Billboard Club Chart in 2000 and 5 weeks #1 in Canada), "Open Up Your Mind" (Top 10 Billboard), "Put On Your Red Shoes" (Top 20 in Germany) and "To The Club" (now a club classic). I'm a voting member of the Grammy Academy since 2006.
Q – Why did you pick "Baby Let’s Play House" for a remix?
It happened often to me to arrive in clubs where the resident DJ was warming up the crowd playing hip hop or R&B. I used to begin my set saying “Baby, let’s play house now” and drop a few bars of a short edit I did of the original version. So I fell in love with this song, mostly because of Elvis’s super voice and its title… not really thinking about the sexual meaning actually, but relating its title to the music genre I’ve been playing as a DJ (house music). Then two years ago I managed to get a hold of an old analog copy on 2” tape of the original master. That was a kind of sign, so I immediately started to work on the remix.
Q – How long did it take to put the song together in the remix format?
The whole job, from the first version to the last definitive mix took nearly two years. It’s really not easy at all to remix Elvis. I’ve focused on making it sound contemporary and cool but keeping, at the same time, the original feel of the track and producing something he’d be happy to listen to. My friend Highpass, who has and excellent musical taste, worked with me on the remix.
