• 11/24/09 - Thanksgiving Greetings

Phrom all of us at Philadelphonic to all of yous guys out there, you, yours and your whole family and generation we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

This year I'm giving thanks for my phamily, my phriends, my girl, my music, and all of the love and support you all have shown us this year and the past 17 years. Holy shizzle we have almost been a band for 20 years. That's crazy.

We just had an amazing little run down in Australia. What a great vibe. Immediately after the tour I flew back to the USA, jumped off at LAX and hit the studio for a two day writing session with producer/writer Luke Walker. We've been working on a banger.

Now, after all of my creative juices have been released, I'm ready to head home and replenish. I'm headed down to Mississippi for Thanksgiving. I can't wait to eat some real deep fried southern turkey with all the fixings of the deep south. Don't worry I will post all the pix on twitter @glove !!!!

Anyways, enjoy your holidays and we can't wait to bring our music to you soon!

Thanks,

Peace, Love and Respect and Happiness!

• Goin' Down

I'm goin down now, I'm going down, down to Australia. South as can be. It's summer in Oz and that seems like a good place to be. We just released our tenth record there called Long Way Down.

We've had the song "Long Way Down" for almost 10 years now I'm sure. It was always one of the those jams you could start a show with. Even though people didn't know it, they would react to it. Everytime. It always hit.

I'm excited to go support this album in OZ right now. I've been off the road for like a month or more now and I'm itching to be back on stage with the band, with the peeps. I live for the stage I thrive on it. I'm addicted to it like a junkie and I need a fix. So give me a mic and a mix and its on. Let's do this thing yo. All I have to do now is fly this 24 hours to Australia and get it on. I'm gonna be jonesing, I need to get up on the mic. Its a challenge for sure, you have to dig deep, even on nights when you don't think you have it, when you don't know where it is or if it's gonna come. You have to find it. And trust me its not about notes or chords. Its about the feeling. It’s about your whole body, mind and soul being engulfed in a euphoric fire. A trance…a ritual. And it’s about gaining the trust of those good people in the audience to take them on a trip. A trip as serious and as light hearted and free as possible.
The music we play draws from the history of music itself. The pain and joy of humanity itself. And onstage we are like human history itself. Sometimes floundering in indecision, sometimes rising to creative heights never before reached. It's all in a night. We are chasers of an intangible spirit. We are dedicated to an unmasterable craft which has infinite possibilities and immeasurable circumstances. I'm the eleven keys of the western scale there are infinite expressions of melody, words and music to express our divine selves. I'm telling you music is love. Love is everywhere. And that's real.
See yall at the show. Let's let it all out and get free - G
Oh Yeah!

• G. Love Blog: 101 Ways...

Greetings Phamily and Phriends. I hope you all are enjoying your phall and everything that comes with it. This week we get back to another segment from my forthcoming book, "101 ways not to F!ck up your chances at being a Rockstar".

Enjoy! G

101 ways - "I love your Shit"

"I love your shit"
Say it again "I love your shit" now keep saying it to everybody you listen to, work with, open up for and definitely say it to the opening act. I know you're an egotistical-self-centered-musician-a**hole but try to remember to be nice.

Be better than nice, be supportive. My old producer Dave "Stiff" Johnson taught me to say "I love your shit" to every other band I would come across. It works too. "I love your shit" is the perfect thing to say and by saying it you will make some struggling fellow egotistical-self-centered-musician-a**hole feel great about what they are doing.

Remember you might be opening for them sometime soon and they might not give a shit about your music but they will remember that you were the person that "loved their shit."

101 Ways Not to F!ck Up your Chances at Being a Rock Star...a Pocket Guide to Navigating the Treacherous Waters of the Modern Music Industry

Chapter 2: What is the game?
"Have you heard of this guy- fucking wails, best player on the east coast" actually no, I haven't heard of this guy. Why haven't I heard of the best player on the east coast. Why haven't we heard of some of the best players and bands ever? Why do so many amazing bands and musicians never make it? Or even worse, why do some of the greats make it then fall off? The answer is simple- THEY HAVE NO GAME

What is game? Who got game? Who needs game?

The game is anything you have to do away from your instrument that enables you to make money playing your instrument. This could be a myriad of activities so please, when your fingers start to bleed and your song writing session is becoming counterproductive - get creative. Take a break and further your career. Here are some ideas to get you started: Talk to your manager, agent, lawyer, accountant, road manager, merch dude and make sure they are on top of their jobs. If you don't have these people yet, start getting them. Make flyers at kinkos, do interviews, schmooze contacts- yeah that's right follow up on that late night, post gig conversation with the dude who was offering you gigs and record deal connex. Getcha schmooze on, getcha, getcha schmooze on. Follow all leads! Other things you can do are: my spacing, face booking, twittering your tweets, getting your groupies lined up coast to coast so your after parties are banging, researching books movies and newspapers for song ideas, reading industry rags to know who's buying what and why, and telling anyone that's listening-- "Check out my Band" and "Yes we will take the gig".
You get the idea. All these and the 1 million other insignificant and profound things you can do to keep your shit rolling qualify as playing the game. Play the game well so that when you do have a show or a record people actually get to hear it (other than your GF, half def great Aunt Sally and your old brown dog...)
Who got game? Examples of people that have game are- your boy G.love (who has profoundly and very sneakily infiltrated the record industry and will surely get a Grammy soon).
Will I Am- watch this guy he is on top of everything.
Dave Matthews- one of the top touring, radio and recording acts of all time AND he has his own record label ATO, winery, management company and basically owns a whole town in Virginia.
The Roots- turned hip hop and urban music upside down.
Jack Johnson - flip flops and all completely destroyed the music industry by doing things his way, in his time and on his terms.
Miley Cyrus- she's going to be worth 1 billion by 18- nuff said.
And - the local band who you know you are better than but who seems to sell out shows every gig.... Hmmm
what are they doing right?

Who needs game?

You need game, I need game we all need more game.
Remember, you can only stay at #1 for a week or two so the music buis is a constant challenge. To get to the top and keep coming back you have to constantly be running game and oh yeah, writing hits! -so that 10 minute break you just took reading this qualifies as honing your game- now get back on that guitar!!!

Game On! G
Oh Yeah!
