The foundation of the band was rather accidental. Norma and Michaela first met in an Irish Dance class in the year 2000, and soon found out that they shared the passion for Irish Traditional Music. Having changed to a more advanced class, they met Tanja, who had similar musical interests. At the end of 2003, the class started to realize the idea of an Irish Dance Show Formation, which had already been lingering for several months. The dancers soon had several private and public performances on a local level, and the group was baptized Gaelic Wind. During that time the dancers increasingly felt the need to have some 'musicians of their own' who could enrich the dance performances by live music. In order to enhance the sound of Michaela's flutes, Norma's fiddle and Tanja's voice, Michael, Michaela's husband, was invited into the group. With him not only the guitar, the Irish bouzouki, the bodhran and keyboards came into the group, but also the first male voice. In addition, he started arranging traditional pieces, writing new songs, and setting Norma's lyrics to music. In March 2004 they had their first gig with Gaelic Wind. Finally feeling like a 'real' band, they called themselves Gaelic WindProject. Approaching another gig in June 2004, an Irish Evening for the benefit of the World Youth Day in 2005 for the catholic parish in Essen-Fischlaken, Gaelic WindProject was on the quest for some expansion once again. Daniel, an old friend of Michaela's and Michael's, supported the group with his guitar and his voice and decided to stay with the band after a both successful and amusing performance that night – which everyone considered as a good decision! The latest new entrant is Katrin, who joined the band as a 'new year's child'. Having enriched GWP as a guest singer in the Christmas Mass in Essen-Fischlaken, she subsequently was asked to stay. When Katrin sang her first duet with Tanja, everyone who had a chance to listen could see that this had been an excellent idea – the sound of the two voices together was a stunning experience. Unfortunately she is in Southafrica at the moment. Very recently we have an old friend Michaela's, Friederike Brücher, playing the accordeon with us. ... to be continued ...
