Yup...people said works were by him to gain more popularity than they otherwise would have gotten.

Died tragically young. His intermezzo "La Serva Padrona" was the most frequently performed operatic work in the 1700s.

Italian composer and violinist/organist. Since his death (1736) many works were and still are falsely ascribed to him, such as the comic opera Il maestro di musica, concertos, and songs. Stravinksy in Pulcinella 'recomposed' material by Pergolesi, but even there some of the attributions are false. I love, Il prigioner superbo, now forgotten except its 2 act intermezzo La serva padrona.
