In December 2003, Alex Round (guitars), Danny Millar (bass) and Ross Standen (drums) set up the funk-orientated rock band currently known as Heft. The line up was soon completed when Jay Vincent (vocalist) joined the group. Hefts first gig was in March 2004 at the Beacon Center, Beaconsfield and was quickly followed up with the recording of the bands first demo, the self-titled ‘Heft EP’ in May. The CD was recorded at Bandbits Studios in Reading, consisting of 4 tracks. The bands style progressed quickly and by August they were back at Bandbits Studios recording the 7 track demo ‘Serial Prankster’. The demo was musically tighter and much more mature than the first EP and was received well by the public. By the end of 2004, Heft had played gigs at venues across London, Cambridge and Leicester and had secured themselves a loyal local fan-base. The band continued to refine its musical sound into 2005 and in April, Heft spent 3 days at the Lodge Recording Studios, Northampton recording the 4 track demo ‘Count Your Losses’. This CD has since proved to be a benchmark for Heft, and an accurate representation of the bands style – mixing elements of funk, rock, prog-rock, metal, rap and hip-hop to create something truly unique. In November 2005, the demo caught the ear of Stephen Lubin of Go-Ahead, London Record Distribution. After viewing the band live at a local gig, he presented Heft with a management contract which they willingly signed. 2006 sees Heft reach the ripe old age of 18 – and with a newly appointed manager and some high profile gigs including Sound, Leicester Square, Profile Fest in Aylesbury, and a string of festivals during the summer. This will hopefully be a promising year for Heft.
