You may be interested to know that I also played drums and corresponded with Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, studied harmonica with (also) Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee (hung out with Brownie at his Oakland family home), and played drums at times with Mance Lipscom. These were irreplacable bluesmen, professionally dedicated supremely talented artists and all of them were so caring amd nice to me as to be unforgettable role models for acceptance and human relations. Wolf himself was loving, progressive and centered (keeping 'rival' Muddy Waters going when Muddy was broke, and getting retirement and healthcare for his band members - back in the day!) as well as predicting a black president - in song, in 1973 - and more.) Chester Burnett was in many ways beyond the ordinary man. Yet his persona on stage and off reaches deeply into all who will listen and see one who transcended childhood suffering, tragic family misery, deplorable poverty and frequent harsh racism and nevertheless developed and retained intention, continuous personal and artistic growth and above all a sense of being true to oneself and others. Howlin' Wolf both was, further evolved into and represented a force of creative beauty and personal truth that few can match, though so many have tried to or imitate and so deeply wish to be close to, and actually are when hearing him sing. This is good! Howlin' Wolf was indeed, as Sam Philips put it upon first hearing him, "This is it! The place where the soul of man goes and never dies."
