THE LEGEND OF I MONSTER IN B FLAT MINOR... Sheffield, the 1990s. The air was filled with bleeps and burps. The second coming of Sheffield electronic music ruled the airwaves. Warp Records, LFO, Nightmares On Wax, Sweet Exorcist were producing cutting edge records that were filling dancefloors and terrorising the pop charts. Meanwhile, in another part of town, Jarrod Gosling and Dean Honer found each other in a hushed little corner of the record lending department of Sheffield City Library. After introducing themselves and chatting for a few hours they discovered that they had nothing in common but poverty and an abundance of free time. Thus they vowed to make an abstract, un-listenable electronic music of such breadth and ambition that it would make all other bleep music seem worthless and trivial. The Anderson Shelter was born. Five years on this futile quest for audio nirvana ended in the dark tunnels of no man's land. Beaten, but too stupid to completely give up, Dean and Jarrod sought refuge once again in the old scratched and crackly dusty vinyl of the Sheffield Library record lending department. In 1997 they changed their name from The Anderson Shelter to I Monster and armed with a Tesco bag full of crap easy listening albums, attempts at sampling and proper song writing began. The results were sometimes hilarious, sometimes hideous and sometimes hopeless, but it was fresh and fun. The fruits of this period ripened into the harvest festival that became their first album, 'These Are Our Children'. This Prince Charles funded venture was given away to anyone that would listen in a spirit of idealistic hope and free love. Oh they were the halcyon days! Like 1967 but thirty years later. In the year 2000 AD, a re-work of the Gunter Kallman sampling 'Daydream In Blue' from the 'Children' album was one of three initial releases on Sheffield seven inch label Cercle Records. It sold like hot cakes, and so they baked many more. Copies were smuggled into Radio One and it was soon getting regular spins on Nemone's and Jo Whiley's BBC Radio shows. Incredibly I Monster were offered a recording contract by a label called Instant Karma, they signed for a box of tea bags and a jar of dripping. 'Daydream In Blue' was released once again, but thist time it was sold for money. The record did well, oh yes, it was most popular and was thrust into the top twenty singles charts. More singles such as 'Hey Mrs' and 'Who Is She' and the album 'Neveroddoreven' followed. I Monster's music has since appeared in many TV syncs and films. Credits include the theme music to the hit Rom-Zom-Com movie 'Shaun Of The Dead', Ford Focus commercials, Macys bra commercials and of course, how could one ever forget the classic Jennie-O-Turkey and Mattesons Fridge Raiders campaigns? The new album 'A Dense Swarm Of Ancient Stars' is finished and will be released in March/April!
