When describing the particular sound of Idiom, one would have to be told the definition of an idiom. One of the many definitions for the word, included in your local handy dandy dictionary is, “A style of artistic expression characteristic of a particular individual or individuals”. Upon this realization, one might come to the realization that Idiom’s sound may not be explained through words, so much as an experience. Try to picture an explosion caused by two high-speed cars colliding. This collision would explain the edge that the band creates with their particular sound. The beauty of a sunset in the balmy summer sky could be the only way to describe the melodic vocals and the accompanying harmonies. Idiom has been slowly and surely perfecting its sound since the spring of 2000. In April of 2000, two lifelong friends, Jarrod Phillips and Mitch Vanhoose, decided that they wanted to better their relationship with one another and God. They also had the desire to express themselves, musically. Within a few months of searching, two friends with the same goals in mind joined their new band, which has come to be known as Idiom. Justen Roberts and Josh Frix completed the puzzle, or so they thought. After a few months the band realized that the initial line-up wasn’t working and that they weren’t focused enough on the primary reason they had started the band. Unfortunately their friend, Josh, decided to leave the band. Idiom experienced a plethora of drummers that did not work out until one day, Wes Blaylock, a friend from their church, joined the band. Finally Idiom had found the link they were missing all along. Idiom continued to play shows almost every weekend for the next year and a half. They independently recorded and released two EP’s and one full length album. After a long summer of playing shows and much traveling, Idiom decided that there was still something missing from their sound. In September of 2002, Matt Saunders joined the band as the primary vocalist. Once the band became a quintet, Idiom’s stage presence and songwriting skills improved approximately one hundred thirty-seven percent. Mitch, guitarist and former singer for Idiom, said, “Every time we recorded and I heard myself sing, I could tell that there was something missing. Now that we have Matt I know that he was the missing link we never experienced.” Over the years Idiom has been compared to many bands and categorized into multiple musical genres. Some people like to label Idiom as pop/punk and others say they kind of sound like emo. Whatever their attributed category may be, the band claims that their music is attributed to a lot of practice, and eclectic taste. The members of Idiom will always consider themselves as fans of music before they consider themselves as musicians. Idiom plays music from their heart, put there by the one reason they play as a band. The bands’ relationship with God is, without a doubt, the only reason they exist. One local fan and friend states, “If you can’t tell they are a Christian band by their words or their music, their actions on and off stage will show you that their faith cannot be denied.” We honestly believe that God will do awesome things through our lives and through Idiom. In May of 2003 all the guys in Idiom will have graduated from high school, and plan to take the band to a new level. Idiom plans to move as a ministry. Idiom plans to rock.
