  jaco played drums with band in ft lauderdale, until the bassist left, he picked it up from that point and taught himself enough to continue as the bands new bassist...

  I played with wayne cochran of cc riders fame in miami back in mid 90's, i remember wayne telling me one night jaco played in the riders for a while, i did some research on that "one" and sure enough he did see jaco, the early years.
