I was born in Dallas, Texas, on the 22nd of December 1972 to John and Ruby Markham. I’m the youngest sibling of one brother, John, and one sister, Cheryl. I learned to play the keyboard at the age of eight. My parents divorced shortly after. Later, mom married Dale Castles. That added another brother, Bryan ‘bc’ and two more sisters, Kimberly and Christina. My stepfather’s career took our family all over Texas, and we had to learn to make friends quickly and leave friends just as fast. However, I never abandoned my passion for music.
I attended schools in many cities in Texas including Dallas, Plano, Hurst, Bedford, Irving, Garland, Abilene, Mesquite, Rockwall, and even the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. I went to high school with my cousin who had a reputation of being a troublemaker. Because of the relationship, none of the band directors would have me in the high school stage band or marching band. They didn’t even give me a chance. Despite my stepfather advising me that I should only do music as a hobby, I started writing music anyways. I drew my musical influences from bands like Genesis, Howard Jones, and Information Society.
In the mid nineties I played Friday nights at a church in front of a small crowd, on a synthesizer. This was quite contrary to the usual couple of guys strumming guitars or singing to backup tapes. I got a job working for Honda, in Dallas in 1997, where I earned my living. Whilst there, I used to stay up late at night writing and recording.
I played in a cover band called Group Therapy for a few years but eventually got burned out on playing the same songs to the same crowd weekend after weekend. I have invested the last few years into writing and recording. In October 2006 I finished 'Big Deal', a collection of electronic songs. My first solo gig was on May 27th 2007 at the Curtain Club in Dallas along with 7 other bands. www.jerrymarkhammusic.com came online on the same weekend. I'm currently working on a special CD that is planned to be released with a book by author Adie Bishop. In addition, I plan to continue working on a few dozen other songs for 2008.
