In less than a year, Jesus Martini has grown to be a Marin club favorite. Formed in 2000, Jesus Martini in it’s simplest form is four guys who are having fun, creating and performing their music. Since their inception, they have developed a reputation for their well crafted power pop songs and their passionate, provocative and energetic live shows. Lead guitarist Gus Scherer commands full attention with his combination of soaring melodies and blistering riffs. Neal Schon has described Jay Drohan’s drum style as “meat & potatoes”. With Jay’s powerful, straight ahead style, he lays down a solid foundation with bassist Michael Weiss. Vocalist/Guitarist John Cunningham fronts the band with intensity, passion a unique ability to really connect with an audience. The sense of fun and camaraderie is visible and contagious at their live shows. Their musicianship and passion are evident in their debut CD. In April 2001, Jesus Martini released their debut, self titled album. “Every show we played, people would ask where they could buy our CD, so creating the CD was really a natural progression.” said vocalist John Cunningham. Recorded at Prairie Sun Studios, with engineer Ralph Patlan, the band members poured their souls into 8 tracks where you can hear the passion in the performance. Where many bands lack a single, Jesus Martini has the dubious distinction of deciding which single to release first. “From the writing, production, CD artwork and financing, we took total control of this project.” said guitarist Gus Scherer. Their desire and attention to detail has paid off, and if the incredible reception of their CD is a preview of things to come, Jesus Martini has a very bright future indeed.
