Circa 1995 - Charlie 6:8 Tate a founder member of The Big Cheese All Stars signed to the Big Cheese label in Paris. A love of the funk was evident from the outset and this 10-piece outfit toured exclusively for nearly two years, supporting such acts as Gil Scott Heron, Fred Wesley, Don Blackman, Roy Ayres and the Godfather himself James Brown. In the meantime DJ Shuff (aka Matt Harris) was out their honing his turntable skills from London to Paris. It was during these heady days that the two long standing friends, decided to team up and began working on a studio based project that became known as King Kooba, releasing they're first single on Big Cheese Records subsidiary 220 Volts. A 4 track EP entitled Headpoppa establishing the direction of the Kooba sound and laying the foundations for bigger and better things
In the May of 97 Charlie 6:8 Tate was hired as bass player for Neneh Cherry's band and a grueling Worldwide tour that was to take up much of that year. This obviously effected the output of the duo, although they were still working on there 1st LP, entitled The Imperial Solution during the breaks from touring. It was around this time that Second Skin Records was formed, with Kooba scheduled as they’re first release.
With a string of successful single releases, including the drum and bass inspired Wolfkub and the funk driven Freakmeister, Kooba began to build a name for themselves in and amongst the underground, both here in the UK and in Europe. Gathering support from a broad and varied audience, from the likes of Ed Rush to Giles Peterson. By the time of the Second LP, Enter The Throne Room, the transition from the studio to the stage had been established. The original live line up containing a member of the Sneaker Pimps Dave Westlake on drums, Simon (Palmskin Productions) Richmond, Dr. Gregory X on keyboards, Shuff on decks and Charlie on Bass.
NuFoundFunk, their 3rd album release for Second Skin Records certainly reflects the pair’s musical heritage, incorporating yet more live instrumentation and vocalists. The band now features a new line up with the addition of the sweet vocals of Melissa Heathcote (Koobesq fame), the spoken word of D’Jaine, Max Sedgley (Breakbeat Era/Reprazent) on drums and V Love (K-Creative founder) on guitar. With NuFoundFunk, the mission to mould and fuze favored moods and styles has been achieved and is out there ready for the taking, a future funk vibe from the future funk duo and their co-stars.
