Rolling Stone: "...a small miracle... wonderful, intensive music... she would be good ony every stage in the world..."
Rootstime (Belgium): "...the sound is warm-blooded, melancholic. Krista's voice is sultry, unctuous; such heart you'd hope to have in a cold winter."
KRISTA DETOR defies genre, but the quality of her writing has been compared to the likes of Leonard Cohen, Laura Nyro, Tom Waits and Joni Mitchell; company she is more than happy to keep.
Krista Detor's debut album, Mudshow, was released in 2006 to international critical acclaim, reaching the #1 spot on the Euro-Americana chart and establishing her as a gifted player on the world stage. Her follow-up record, Cover Their Eyes, released in 2007, made similar waves in the European and U.S. musical worlds and, in three short years by 2009, she has rapidly expanded her world audience and musical standing.
Krista has created a collection of brilliantly provocative and compelling songs in Cover Their Eyes that push the edges of genre while remaining close throughout to the lyrical thread that defines her work.
Cover Their Eyes spans era and style, incorporating the musical influence of some of the places in which Krista has lived and traveled – the southern U.S., the Midwest and Europe. All distinct on their own, these regional and cultural influences are woven together in a continuous pattern of sound and story.
A writer with the rare ability to convey her songs via a beautiful voice and acute musical sensibilities, she’s praised by critics and concert promoters alike: Says promoter Miner Seymour, “…an artist with a stunning voice, evocative without being
overly emotional, and the stage presence to deliver the full intent of her lyrics to the audience.”
Detor's music has been featured at the Cannes Film Festival; on NPR, the BBC, Dutch National Radio, German National Radio, and Belgian National Radio; as well as countless U.S. and European national, regional, and local radio shows and podcasts. She’s appeared on both U.S. and European television and contributed the featured performance for the National Domestic Violence Hotline Conference in Washington D.C. in 2006.
In 2007, she completed the collaborative stageshow & CD, Wilderness Plots, with award-winning songwriter Carrie Newcomer, as well as Tim Grimm and a small group of talented Indiana songwriters. The show & CD have received rave reviews, and the subsequent PBS Special on the project has been nominated for a regional Emmy award. The show continues to tour throughout the U.S.
Touring the U.S. and Europe continuously, Detor has shared stages with Joan Armatrading, Suzanne Vega, Loudon Wainwright, Sam Philliips, Colin Linden, Chris Wood, Luka Bloom, Slaid Cleaves, Peter Mulvey, The Wailing Jennys, Jakob Dylan, Jez Lowe, Carrie Newcomer, Lucy Kaplansky, and John Gorka, among others, and travels with her partner and producer, David Weber.
In addition to her appearances in the U.S. and Northern Europe, Krista will tour the UK in late Summer 2009, and again in Spring of 2010 to promote a brand new album.
NEWS:
Krista on the BBC. In March of 2009, Krista Detor was one of 8 songwriters (and one of only 2 Americans) brought together to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth - in a collaborative effort known as 'The Darwin Song Project.' This week-long collaboration took place in a 16th century farmhouse in Shrewsbury, England, and culminated in a concert at the newly built Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury. The BBC followed throughout, and aired numerous special broadcasts in the weeks following the concert. The concert will be repeated at the Shrewsbury Folk Festival in August 2009 to a sold-out audience of 1000, at which time the live CD of the project will be released.
Krista in MAVERICK Magazine The September 2009 issue of Maverick Magazine features a two-page feature article on the Darwin Song Project, including song reviews and a summary of the event. It's available at all Barnes & Noble, Borders, and many other booksellers and shops.
