Just voted Contemporary Album of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, Blood’s Too Rich is proving to be one of 2008’s top releases. Luke Doucet, the Gretsch-slinger behind one of author Nick Hornby’s favourite songs of the year (“The Comandante”), will return to Western Canada in 2009 soaring high after a recent opening slot for James Blunt.
There are guitarists, and then there’s Luke Doucet. But it’s not all about the hot licks and searing riffs; Luke’s sharp songwriting is also receiving recognition, including a nomination for this year’s CBC Radio 3 Bucky for Best Lyric. Title track “Blood’s Too Rich” laments big dreams and small change, and cuts to the quick. Blood’s Too Rich is a one-two punch that fought its way to the top of the radio chart trio, reaching #1 on Earshot, ChartAttack and CBC Radio 3 this year.
Awards and celebrity attention aside, Doucet is in the business for one reason and that’s to play music. The songs on Blood’s Too Rich reflect the facts of life on the road, the necessarily nomadic life of a touring musician, and what it’s like to come home when that home has moved again. Doucet travels roads and musical history, and Blood’s Too Rich is also a journey through some of the finest musical influences each decade has to offer.
Doucet and his band, including Blue Rodeo’s darling Melissa McClelland, Rich Levesque and Gord Stevenson, travel across Canada in March 2009. -
