M.A.N.D.Y.
Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung, a.k.a M.A.N.D.Y, used to dream of how to make a living out of their shared loves: collecting records, throwing parties and making friends. They now more than live that dream as they travel the globe on what seems to be a never-ending tour whilst simultaneously releasing records and co-running with friends Booka Shade and DJ T their own internationally renowned label ‘Get Physical Music’.
Before M.A.N.D.Y was born, they pursued other careers but spun records together at every opportunity. At 25 Philipp worked for Snap’s record company in Frankfurt whilst Patrick studied as a painter. They released on local independent imprints and devised their unofficial Lust (eng: joy, zest, delight) parties. Later Patrick acquired an old brewery as an atelier, which served as a cauldron bubbling with their creative ideas. In 1997, however, Philipp moved to Cologne to work in A&R for Jive, and then to Berlin to do the same job for V2. Patrick finished studying before taking a sensible day job he quickly came to detest.
When DJ T and Patrik (The Sunsetpeople), from Frankfurt’s Monza club, heard them play at a party the four quickly became close friends. In 2001 M.A.N.D.Y. started a Monza residency, which has since spread its wings to Ibiza, London and beyond. Their old pals Arno and Walter (Booka Shade) soon joined them in Frankfurt and they intensified their work together. The first official M.A.N.D.Y. release, a remix of French electronic band Galleon became a big-selling chart sensation; DJ work poured in but they couldn’t reconcile their musical values with the commercial scene and they abandoned it after a few short months.
Finally this circle of close and talented friends decided to start a label and call it Get Physical: in tribute to the dance floor; in memory of their meeting; and for their love of disco, with a nod to Olivia Newton-John. It was born out of the need to create something tangible from a lifelong passion. In 2002, M.A.N.D.Y. and Booka Shade moved to Berlin seeking a new creative kick. They found a confluence of artists and ideas, and a constant shower of music to immerse themselves in – they have been based there ever since.
M.A.N.D.Y mixed the first Get Physical label compilation in 2004. Their collaboration with Booka Shade, ‘Body Language’ sealed their reputation across the globe. A bonafide anthem, it was Ibiza’s Track of the Season and DJ Magazine’s Track of the Year for 2005. Their ‘Body Language Vol.1’ mix CD was DJ Magazine’s Mix CD of the Year, a mixture of electro-influenced house, disco and minimal techno. Their ‘At The Controls’ mix series in 2006 flitted effortlessly between genres revealing a more sensuous side to their sound without compromising their underground, electronic house edge. The mix won Mix CD of the Year from Resident Advisor, BBC Essential Mix and Mixmag in the UK. In 2008 they brought their talents to the Fabric mix series.
Philipp and Patrick are also much sought after remixers, having worked with artists as diverse as The Knife, Sugababes, Hans Peter Lindstrom, Joakim, Royksopp, The Klaxons, Mathew Dear; the “12 Great Remixes for 11 Great Artists” compilation is testament to the variety and reach of their productions. Meanwhile, their DJing talents are in constant demand across the world, and they regularly rock floors from Buenos Aires to Sydney, New York to Moscow.
