    Hey y'all!

Thanks to everyone who participated in this experiment we've decided to call 'wertzwednesday' - it was so fun to read the albums y'all bought most recently!

We DO have a winner, that we randomly selected from all the posts marked #wertzwednesday, and the first winner is @samanderson78!

We'll do it again next week for something completely different but equally AWESOME!

  • Look what I found...

Ok, so a lot of people have responded to wanting the vintage merch I found around the house, and a lot of y'all have downloaded the free live album i put out there last week, so here's what i'm thinking... how about I give something away every week through the end of the year? Like, every Wednesday? we could call it #WertzWednesday or something like that.

    Here's what i've found:

Orange EP (released summer '02), contains REALLY early (and acoustic) versions of:
    Red Meets Blue
    Way Back to Yesterday
    Counting to 100
    Hiding Behind a Smile
    I'm Sorry, Mary

This was produced by my friend Steve Wilson who produced Somedays- we packaged the orange ep in a double disc case with Somedays for a little while. Fun Fun Fun.

My first 8x10 glossy promo shot EVER! I had this taken in the summer of '01 before I moved to Nashville. The picture was taken on the historic square in my hometown of Liberty, Missouri.

A 'blingin' since '79 shirt (medium only!)- This wasn't the FIRST Matt Wertz shirt ever, but it was the first one i made more than 100 of. They came in all different colors, and I randomly have a baby blue one left.  I stopped printing them when I the word 'blingin' stopped being cool....What? It wasn't EVER cool? Nobody ever tells me these things...

The 'MW' flame sticker. I don't know what I was trying to communicate with this sticker. maybe that I was en fuego or too hott to handle or something like that. Needless to say, there aren't any more of these being made, so this is the only way to get one!

A handmade bandana necklace!  Yeah, if you look closely in the promo pic- i'm rocking one. They were my signature for about a year or so, and I made a bunch and sold them at shows. I found a couple - i dont know if they will fit whoever wins, or if they are even cool enough to wear, but just know that yours truly sure did think they were cool for about 14 months.

  • BYE BYE Major Label, New Site, FREE Live Album!

    BYE, BYE MAJOR LABEL!
    NEW WEBSITE!
    FREE LIVE ALBUM DOWNLOAD!
    WEEKLY SUPRISES!
    NEW ALBUM!

Hey y'all- lots going on around here, as you can see from the header.
    So, let's get after it-

    BYE BYE MAJOR LABEL!
After two years of being on Universal Republic records and releasing 'Under Summer Sun', my stint with a major label is over and I am back to being an independent artist.  I love the people at Universal Republic and had fun giving that approach a shot, but i'm indie at heart, and i am so excited to get back to my roots! The last couple months have been full of me coming up with ideas and dreaming about what the next step in my musical journey is, and I'm really stoked about sharing some of that with you in this email as well as over the upcoming months.

    NEW WEBSITE!
So, yeah. The old one hadn't been updated since LAST December. This one will be updated a lot more frequently, and with features like Twitter commenting, and the ability for me to update the site from my iPhone, this thing is going to be constantly changing, so bookmark that mutha!

    FREE LIVE ALBUM DOWNLOAD!
Ok, so I did a tour a year and a half ago called the 'Where We Started' tour. I brought my friend and artist Justin Rosolino out to be my side man/guitar player/stunt double on a series of shows in small, listening-room type venues across the U.S. The first show of the west coast run was in Seattle at the Triple Door, and it turned out to be a super special night. We just so happened to be recording that night, and listening back to it, I thought 'People will want to hear this.' So, that's what we're doing, for free.

I called it 'If it Ain't Broke...Live from Seattle' because we literally didn't do any edits to the recording besides making sure the tracks were split accurately. Because of that, there are some missed notes here and there, rants that go on way too long, and the first 2 seconds of 'Carolina' are missing.  But hey, you can't have it all, eh?

To get it, just click HERE. the set list is special, the performances are full on, and I really can't WAIT for you to have this thing- tell your friends, spread the word, It will only be free through the end of the year!

    WEEKLY SUPRISES!
I've got an idea for how to utilize this new Twitter phenomenon, and I think it's going to be cool- follow me (@mattwertz) and I'll be letting you in over the next week of what's gonna happen, but it involves me giving stuff away every week...

    NEW ALBUM!
So, now that i'm indie again, it's time to start crackin on new music, and I'm so
excited to announce that I've been in and out of the studio over the last month and will continue that over the next couple until I have an album's worth of material that is better than anything i've ever put out before.  Keep checking mattwertz.com and the twitter feed for updates on that!

I guess, above all, I want to just say 'THANK YOU' for continuing to be with me, spreading the word, and letting my songs be a part of the soundtrack of your life.

    more on the way-
    Matt

  • New song Keep Faith; iTunes pre-order

If you haven't found a good enough reason to pre-order my new cd, Under Summer Sun yet, here's my last attempt at wooing you-

YOU CAN NOW PRE-ORDER "UNDER SUMMER SUN" ON ITUNES!!

Yep, it's true- and you'll still get 'Where We Started', the 7 song acoustic EP, but not until September 16th, when the album comes out!

Also- I'm going to be headlining some shows in the Midwest in October (or ROCKtober, as I like to call it). I'll have a band with me and we'll be playing some of the new tunes- so see if we're anywhere close to you and come say hey!

Want to hear one of the new songs from the CD? I posted a song called 'Keep Faith' that I wrote after talking with one of my friends who was really hurtin' after a broken relationship. I wanted to encourage her toward what she knows to be TRUE. Give it a listen and let me know what you think! I can't wait for y'all to hear the rest of it!

Thanks again for everything, y'all- I'll see ya real soon!

    - Matt

I don't know what y'all have been doing this summer, but i've been

    I'm not even joking.

I can't stop listening to this dang song.

  • Listening to Bon Iver

    Listening to Bon Iver.

    My nana is dying.

You cant negotiate with death. There is no bartering with it. It is
totally inconsiderate of everyone it involves.

I’ve been confronted with death one other time, with my Papa Doc.
That time it came out of nowhere- we all felt a bit violated in the
swiftness of it’s movement.  One minute he was with us, the next he
    wasn’t.

Nana is different. We’re having time to get used to it before it
actually comes around. We’re actually able to cozy up to it and become
friends with it this time. Strange.  There is healing, though.
Reconciliation is happening. Things are being resolved that for years
    hadn’t been.

She’ll leave with us Poppy.  It made me sad to see my Poppy alone in
their kitchen. Staring at the floor.  It made me sad to see him
sitting next to her in the hospital.  I wonder what will happen when
Nana dies? What will he do?

    60 years. Over.

Seeing them together makes me want what they have. It makes me want to
spend 60 years with someone. Collect memories with someone.  Have
children and watch them have children.  I want it.

Also, somehow all of this reminds me that this life- the one I’m
living right now- is for REAL. This is it. I know that sounds cliché &
like something you’d see on a high school guidance counselor’s wall,
but we really don’t live like it’s gametime. At least, I haven’t been.

And why does it take someone dying to get everyone together for 2
days?  We can take a day off work, spend the $300, push pause on life
& go be with the people we love. I want to believe that it doesn’t
require a national holiday or someone dying to bring people together.

I also pray that it doesn’t take a person dying for people to start
communicating their hearts and what the person means to us, or to
finally forgive someone- or to ask someone’s forgiveness.  But a lot
of times it DOES take that.

That’s why I love John Mayer’s ‘Say’. It’s so poignant. So profound in
it’s simplicity. He’s speaking the truth.

How did such a soft, sensitive guy like Poppy attract such a strong,
bull-headed woman like Nana? However he did, I’m thankful, because had
he not, I would not be.

    And so it goes.

    This is it.

    I’m thankful.
