Mia Johnson has made a name for herself in her adopted hometown of Philadelphia and throughout the East Coast with her outstanding vocals, well-crafted songwriting, and intense live performances. Mia grew up in Cedarville, Michigan - a small vacation town on Lake Huron with a population of under 200. Classic rock cover bands and a few local radio stations defined the town’s musical scene. The closest place to see original music was 300 miles away in Detroit. Yet, still in her teens, Mia was picking up a guitar for the first time and penning original songs, influenced the music of Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. Fleeing the confines of small-town life and seeking to broaden her horizons, Mia relocated permanently to Philly. She continued writing songs and began performing in public for the first time – initially on the street (because she wasn’t old enough to get into bars), then at whatever open mics wouldn’t ask for ID, and eventually playing full gigs in those bars, local cafes, and anywhere she could. During the day, she worked multiple jobs (typesetter, taxi driver, cigarette girl) to save up enough money to record a demo and to take her music full-time. Those demo recording sessions evolved into the seven-song EP, Access – an excellent mix of songwriter alterna-pop, roots-influenced rock, and world music that was compared to artists such as Ani DiFranco, Alanis Morissette and Janis Joplin. Mia began touring behind the EP in Philadelphia, New York City, and Baltimore/Washington DC metro areas, playing with artists such as G. Love & Special Sauce, Pat Benatar, and Dan Bern. Without the support of a record label or any other outsiders, Mia and percussionist Hoagy Wing toured up and down the East Coast, expanding her fan base by playing twelve to twenty intense live shows a month – as far south as Jacksonville, Florida and as far north as Bangor, Maine. Mia followed up the release of Access with the 5-song EP, Five For Freddy, which expanded on the unique blend of sounds created on Access. After a long-deserved rest from the road, Mia has hit the stage again, this time with her first full-fledged band. The four-piece Mia Johnson Band integrates the diverse styles displayed on her previous releases with straight-ahead rock and island influences. The band is currently in the studio working on a full-length album.
I've been a huge fan since the first time I saw Mia perform back in '96 in Philly. I can't remember the name of the bar, but the band I was in at the time was playing our first gig downstairs and when we finished we went upstairs for a drink and there she was. Everything about her music is amazing. Catching a live gig is incredible. Living in England for the past 6 years I haven't been able to do that. Maybe she'll do a little tour over here. Keep rockin Mia.
