Starting as a date night activity for a young couple, Mild Winter quickly developed into a three member band. The Harrisonburg, Virginia based group fuses elements of alt-country, folk and indie rock to produce a sound noted for its use of traditional instruments in an unconventional manner. Benjamin Schlabach's distinct voice is often found leading the band, as he fills vocal and guitar roles. His wife, Melanie, joins him at the microphone, bringing a classically trained background to the group’s vocals and on violin. Playing brush drums and flat picking on banjo, Nicklaus Combs rounds out the eclectic trio.
Learning from generations past and admiring contemporary acts, Mild Winter has a rustic feel, performed with modern methods, appealing to a wide audience. Amongst their influences, the band cites Bob Dylan, Hank Williams and the Avett Brothers.
