Singer/songwriter/guitarist Mimi Cross lives just outside of NYC in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. Mimi plays throughout the tri-state area including Manhattan clubs like The Living Room, The Bitter End, and CB's Gallery. Mimi began performing solo several years ago in Asbury Park, NJ where she has shared the bill with national acts such as Chris Whitley and Jill Sobule among others. She talks enthusiastically about the scene there where she has been given several awards for best female vocalist: 'I started playing in Asbury Park and I found a great, diverse musical community that supports original music in a big hearted way...there is a lot of respect for a well written song in the Asbury venues.' She talks about the need to expand her community: 'I kept playing, writing, playing...played in NYC, drove up to play in Boston, back to NJ, into NYC, got a band together, back to NJ, into NYC , wrote with other people, recorded some demos etc. etc. etc.' People who hear us love the music, but the A&R guys say, 'I don't know, What do you think?' So - here we are, Online! Hopefully connecting with a new bunch of people who have ears! ' Mimi has warmed up at the PNC Bank Arts Center for artists such as Sting, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Lauryn Hill and Shawn Colvin. She has played at CMJ and the Philadelphia Music Conference and has been accepted into NXNE. The influences of Cross' classical training (she has under grad and graduate degrees in music) as well as her jazz studies, can both be heard in her song writing. Grammy award winning artist Rosanne Cash describes Cross' unusual work: 'Mimi fuses delicacy and power, heart and gut. Her writing and singing are inspiring, evocative and refreshing. It1s a pleasure to have discovered her work.' Mimi Cross has a nine song independent CD release entitled Monkey Trap which is best described as a hybrid of musical styles. The lyrics attempt to describe what goes on inside people and between people. The production is a diverse mix of acoustic based tracks, live band and solo performances with some cool computer generated samples and loops. MImi says she "had a lot of help from some extremely talented musicians, producers and engineers on that recording...' Mimi has just finished her new CD "I Slept..." and is waiting breathlessly for your reviews!
