  • just arrived in mexico city.

just arrived in mexico city. and just had tortillas y frijoles negros y guacamole. see, it's easy to be vegan in mexico. well, as long as they don't get crazy with the manteca.

in other news: the flight from houston to dallas was amazing, some of the worst turbulence i've ever experienced. you know it's bad turbulence when 1/2 the people on the plane are crying and/or praying. i don't know what's wrong with me, but i love turbulence. it's kind of comforting to feel as if god is swatting the plane with the back of his/her/its hand. perhaps i'm alone in my feelings about turbulence. i remember one time flying from l.a-nyc and the turbulence was really intense and the guy next to me looked at me in terror and i had a big smile on my face. i mean, you toss a little metal tube up in the sky at 38,000 feet and it's bound to get knocked around a bit, right? i assume that the nice people at boeing or airbus or embraer or bombardier have double checked to make sure that the planes can handle some god swatting at 38,000 feet.

in other news, i'm looking forward to playing live in mexico. the last time i toured here (18 months ago) i played a dance set. this tour is much more focussed on the live band, with some dance songs, but mainly focussing on the live performances. i hope you like it.

    thanks

  • just heading to boston. 4 days in nyc was nice, and now it's back out.

just heading to boston. 4 days in nyc was nice, and now it's back out. which is also nice. touring in north america after about 5 years of not touring in north america is interesting. thus far it's been great. and here's hoping that somehow it will continue to be great.

if i sound overly simple it's because it's really early and i have to go get on amtrak and i haven't had any caffeine this morning and my brain is sitting dormant in its brain pan. we are a planet of caffeine addicts.

ok, hopefully see you soon. thanks again for coming out to the shows that we've done.

you know, i make a lot of music videos.

i mean, even for 'mistake' we've made 3 music videos. but this video for 'mistake' (done by my friend katy baugh) is one of my favorites. it's katy's first ever music video, and i think it's amazing (done for a mighty budget of $400).

it's also on wired.com for it's debut, which is nice. i hope you like it.

i love it (especially when the lemon gives his hat to the 'sea cucumber').

  • just finished playing in porto, what a great show. thank you, porto. and thanks andy, joy, liz, rob, sarah, and svet!

just finished playing in porto, what a great show. thank you, porto. and thanks andy, joy, liz, rob, sarah, and svet!

now, some politics... i know, the right wing are insane. we all know it, but it still amazes me just how loony they are. they marched on washington on saturday in all of their lunatic regalia.

i guess what annoys me the most is the inconsistency of the right wing in 2009.

they talk about the democrats taking away constitutional freedoms. but yet the bush administration restricted freedom of speech, restricted habeas corpus, installed illegal wiretaps, and marginalized congress and voters.

the right wing complain about spending money on health care for uninsured americans, but did the right wing complain about the $1.4 trillion dollar cost of the war in iraq? the cost of insuring uninsured americans is actually considerably LESS than the war in iraq.

they talk about democrats raising the budget, but the federal budget actually increased more under 8 years of bush and the republicans than at any time in the history of the country. they talk about limiting the size of government, but the federal government was at it's biggest when the republicans and bush were in power.

it would be one thing if there were even a modicum of validity or consistency to the complaints of the right wing in 2009, but they're isn't. everything they complain about was actually worse under bush and the republicans, but for 8 years the lunatic right wing just sat back as the republicans eroded constitutional freedoms, grew the federal budget, grew the federal government, and spent $1 trillion on the unnecessary war in iraq.

the right wing are truly just angry, delusional lunatics. i know, calling names isn't dignified. but what else do you call a group of people who truly are just angry and delusional and insane?

in brussels getting ready to play at the a.b.
and last night played studio 69 for studio brussel.

and we'll play some songs there, too.
    and friday is taratata.
and saturday is the show in porto.
and then the north american tour starts.
and i'm ready for a nap.

in other news, the loonie right wing republicans in the u.s are upset because president obama wants to give a speech to school kids wherein he encourages the schoolkids to work hard and stay in school. oh, and president obama is also going to talk about how important education is in order to succeed in life. so you can see why the right wing republicans are upset... i mean who wouldn't be upset about a speech wherein the president of the united states espouses the virtues of hard work and education?

i'm kidding (to be clear). but seriously, maybe republicans and the right wing are genuinely afraid of education, seeing as the world of facts contradicts almost every aspect of the republican agenda. like the inconvenient 'fact' of evolution. and global warming. and the lack of wmd's in iraq. and etc. so maybe republicans have figured out, rightly so, that the more educated people are the less likely they are to be republican. so i understand their concern at obama encouraging kids to stay in school and study hard. it's only through ignorance and fear that the right wing republicans exist at all.

    ok, time to go perform.

    thanks

driving over the williamsburg bridge yesterday, and manhattan looked amazing at dusk. The dark buildings against the peach colored dusk. Sometimes manhattan looks like a giant jawbone, with jagged building teeth. Here's a blurry cameraphone picture.

  • have you ever spent any time with parrots?

have you ever spent any time with parrots? a friend of mine had a parrot who spoke english. not just repeating phrases, but actually speaking. identifying things correctly, etc.

i know, we humans think we're fairly smart, and we have done some cool things, like invent dentistry and fly to the moon, but how many non-human languages do we understand? do we speak dog? or parrot? no. but yet parrots can speak english. which means that even though they haven't flown to the moon or invented dentistry (which might not be needed if you don't actually have teeth) they speak human and we don't speak parrot.

    so, parrots: 1, humans: 0.

and to anyone who says that parrots just dumbly repeat what's told to them please watch this video:

  • so the next single from 'wait for me' is going to be 'mistake'.

so the next single from 'wait for me' is going to be 'mistake'. and in the spirit of excess/indecision we've decided to make three videos for it...

-one animated video with the dog and the little idiot.
-one video involving a lemon and a sea cucumber.
-and one video involving paranormal experiences.

the lemon/sea-cucumber and paranormal videos are being finished right now, but the animated video with the dog and little idiot is all done and here it is:

  • as the united states becomes less agricultural it becomes, generally, more covered in forests..

as the united states becomes less agricultural it becomes, generally, more covered in forests. and as the forests spread you start to see the return of big animals ('megafauna', one of my favorite words) who haven't been around in the states for decades, if not a century. like bears, for example.

when i had a house upstate i used to see black bears shambling around at the edge of the woods every now and then. i also saw lots of deer and wild turkeys and occasionally saw signs that wolves had been sniffing around in the woods (like peter and the wolf, minus the duck and the malevolence). but the bears are kind of the most interesting, as the black bears are for the most part shy and fat and reclusive (although they do still occasionally kill people. remember: avoid black bears, but if one charges you wave your hands in the air and scream and never run away from a black bear. outdoors safety tip #274. this only works with black bears. never yell at a grizzly bear. just fyi). and now you have people in the suburbs having fairly regular encounters with mega-fauna who used to just be in zoos (i mean, there were no deer or bears or wolves in darien, connecticut when i was growing up). eagles, too. i used to see gigantic eagles swooping around upstate (1 hour north of nyc).

so as the bears return you end up with the occasional bear in a skate park, like in this accidentally minimalist picture:

this bear wandered into a skate park and couldn't get out. so someone had the simple idea, 'well, we could bring in a helicopter or tranquilize the bear or bring in a cage. or we could just pop a ladder in the skate park and let the bear climb out.' which, eventually, the bear did. i just love this simple picture. bear. ladder. skate bowl. and, for the record no bears or people or ladders were hurt in the process. i really do wonder why the bear went into the skate bowl in the first place. maybe he thought it was a giant cement bee hive. i'm sure he was embarrassed when he realized it was just an old swimming pool.
