More Human Than Human is the award-winning music collaboration of Gerald Berliner and Nick Gaiger.
They originally hail from West London, first meeting at school in Ealing and have remained life-long friends ever since. In 1993 Gerald left London to take up residence in NYC where he now lives. Nick remained in London. Not letting a mere 3000 miles get in the way, they forged a transatlantic collaboration to continue their shared passion for making music, only this time from either side of the ocean.
More Human Than Human were formerly known as Nick+Gerald. Here Gerald explains the reasoning and idea behind the name change.
"The name comes from a line in the movie Bladerunner, where Dr. Eldon Tyrell is explaining to Deckard what the Tyrell Corporation's motto is: "Commerce is our goal here at Tyrell, more human than human is our motto..."
The Tyrell Corporation create Replicants, synthesized human beings almost impossible to tell apart from their actual human counterparts.
The idea behind this name change is that as we have delved deeper into the craft of digital recording it has become clear how integral technology has become in the production of music and sound these days.
Sound synthesis and instrument sound emulation has become so sophisticated that it is now also very hard to tell 'manufactured' instruments and sounds from real instruments. Whether this a good or bad thing, well that argument is sure to rage on.
This is obviously an important change for us, but only in name. We feel it will also give us more flexibility in being able to collaborate with other musicians and artists and that it's just more reflective of our kind of music."
