Mwalim is a multifaceted, Black Wampanoag songwriter, pianist, arranger, producer, singer, and storyteller, who’s sound spans the genres of soul, jazz, nu-jazz, Afro-beat, and house music. Born in Bronx New York and raised in Bronx, New York and Mashpee, Massachusetts, Mwalim grew up immersed in all kinds of music, ranging from classical to jazz, soul, hip-hop, Native American, Afro-Latin and West Indian styles of music. Black Masks Magazine cited him as “one of the leading voices in this generation of artists.” Mwalim began life as a viola player, but his interests in songwriting and composition led to his studying piano with his grandfather, noted big band leader and arranger for the stars, Allan Nurse. As a student at Music & Art High School in New York City, Mwalim was drawn to the jazz studies and audio production programs and upon his grandfather’s death began receiving piano coaching from jazz pianist Barry Harris. He also began to sneaking into after-hours jams at the Blue Note and other spots around town, until moving to Boston to attend Boston University, where he became a part of the cities bustling jazz nd alternative rock scene. In 1995, he became front man for “Oversoul Collective” the rich ethnic blend of heir music led the band calling their style Coffeehouse Soul and released a local EP entitled “Voices of Our Ancestors” where Mwalim took the lead as writer and producer of most of the bands tracks. He also loaned his songwriting, arranging and production talents to projects for the Northshore based, dance label, Elephant Ride Records, co-authoring and producing a dance chart debut hit with “Higher (Then A Dime)” by Worth The Wait. In 2000, after several years of touring the spoken-word and eclectic artist circuit, Mwalim released a solo CD single project, “Thief in the Night” that became an underground hit, selling over 12,000 copies up and down the east coast. This was followed by a vinyl only EP specificallt targeting House, Acid Jazz, and Rare Groove DJs. The instrumental “Out of the Woods” quickly became a favorite for dance floors throughout the world. Mwalim continues to tour and perform throughout the USA as well as lend his skills to other artists projects; writing and producing tracks for independent artists such as Chandlar, the Vibe Providers, as well as projects for artists signed to Black Brick, RMG, Sony and Universal records. His award winning small-club concerts and musical performance pieces are storytelling journeys through a rich blend of jazz, soul, and funk.
