Nelly Shin is an independent singer, songwriter, and pianist, whose music has reached soft rock listeners in Canada, the US and abroad, via airwaves and Internet radio.
After almost a decade of singing as a Gospel singer in the Greater Toronto Area, in 2005, Nelly released her first album, a self-titled pop/rock CD, produced by Brian Gagnon (who has toured with Rush and recorded early Shania Twain). Her album is a collection of mostly self-penned songs that explore a broad spectrum of themes on love, pain, hope and empowerment.
Upon first testing, her single, Marrow of My Heart appeared on the recommended rotation list of Eric Norberg's Adult Contemporary Music Research Letter (Portland, OR) in August 2005, alongside Kelly Clarkson's Because of You. She also enjoyed a No. 21 spot in June 2006, on Emusic.com's monthly charts for Most Downloaded Rock/Pop Composer.
Nelly has sung at showcases, festivals, and concerts including Artsweek 'O5, where she shared the program with Andy Kim and Ashley MacIsaac. Throughout her singing career, Nelly has appeared on Canadian television including CTV, Vision, CFMT (Omni), and TLN and has been invited to speak at radio interviews. She has also graced the stage at official political engagements with the Canadian national anthem.
Behind this seasoned Canadian songstress, are many years of rigorous musical training which boasts of a Bachelor of Music from the University of Toronto, and lessons in composition, orchestration, and piano at the Royal Conservatory of Music. During her teens, she brought home two First Awards from the Kiwanis Music Festival for her original compositions. Her vocal skills were honed through choral and operatic training. During her undergraduate studies, Nelly had the opportunity to sing in a symphony chorus with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Erik Kunzel.
From humble beginnings as the daughter of first generation immigrant parents, Nelly has worked hard to keep her musical dreams alive, while learning to juggle work, study and charitable works throughout her life. Her Christian faith is Nelly's greatest source of strength and inspiration.
Nelly is currently studying at a seminary and is also working on her next project. Release date to be announced.
