Looking forward to the new opera directed by Cronenberg called The Fly premeiring in Paris as well as the new opera Melancholia.

Sure Josh Groban could sing Verdi, but I don't think I would want to hear it (and especially given the orchestration in later Verdi, you probably wouldn't be able to hear him over the orchestra at all). In everything he sings now, he has a mic. He never has to use his voice in a way that it has to penetrate and carry over a large ensemble.
Also, in order to perform Puccini and Verdi, his voice will have a to grow much more in order to sing the repertoire well. If Groban did choose to p... If Groban did choose to pursue singing any opera, he would need more training and he would have to sing much lighter roles with smaller orchestra before making any big pursuits.

pop singer? operasinger? who says? what on earth qualifies anyone, if you sing opera, then you are an opera singer, like it or not! if you sing pop you are a pop singer! if you sing both pop and opera then you are still an opera singer and a pop singer - so what?! what a bunch of snobs. a trained voice is just that, trained well it can sing whatever it pleases, Josh Groban can and will sing Verdi, Puccini or Rossini (to name but three) when he uses his full classical training then he is able ... seriously, I can't imagine why anyone would say that a classically trained singer has no right to sing opera or claim to be an opera singer,in fact, if anyone sings opera then strictly speaking, good or bad, they are opera singers.

i agree with D Justin and everyone else who thinks Bocelli is just a singer not deserving of being categorized as an opera singer. There is virtually no difference between him and Eros Ramazotti or even Zuchero. I think he is grossly overrated at whatever his music is classified. If we are putting Opera in the hands of Bocelli, there will be many empty theaters around the world...

What is Phantom of the Opera doing on this list? It maybe more operatic than most musicals and require opera training to sing, but it is certainly not opera.

How totally right D Justin Carpenter is in his comparison of Andrea Bocelli/Josh Groban with Luciano Pavarotti. As a vocal student I know that there is a solar system's difference between being able to sing an operatic aria (or even having a "nice voice") and mastering a complete operatic role!! Pavarotti could, Domingo can but Bocelli just doesn't have the emotional depth. If you want a straightforward like for like comparison you only have to listen to Bocelli's version of the Italian pop s... If you want a straightforward like for like comparison you only have to listen to Bocelli's version of the Italian pop song, "Caruso" and then brace yourself for Pavarotti's!! Talk about blowing someone out of the vocal water!!!!! Complete no-brainer to my mind.

Ok Amanda that's going a little too far...I love Josh Groban, but people need to learn the difference between operatic and classical singing. He has a beautiful voice...but that's all.
