Orpheus was conceived in the summer of 1999 when Bob Saunders, Denny Barron, and Greg McKeever got together for a jam session. They had been friends for several years and had been learning how to play instruments for a while when they decided to organize their efforts to form a band. They booked their first show for November 27, 1999 at Full Circle Records with the expectation of writing several songs and learning a few covers before that date. While they found it difficult to produce songs in such a short period of time, they managed to perform five original songs and three covers on the night of the show. Given the short amount of preparation, it was a fairly successful show and people seemed to think that Orpheus had potential.
Despite the overall success of this show, Greg was unsure if he would be able to continue drumming for the band while working on a tough semester at school. He decided that this band had too much potential to walk away from and that he should remain in the band while keeping school his top priority. And so the band continued to write new material and perform shows on the local scene.
After many shows and a lot of fine-tuning on their songs, Orpheus decided they could use a little more texture to add depth to their music. At that point, TJ Wark, guitarist for Dubbed In English, expressed interest in joining the project. After practicing several times with TJ, Orpheus decided that the band could benefit greatly from a guitarist with his experience. Since then, new guitar parts have been written for old songs and new songs are currently being written to take advantage of a second guitarist.
When asked what they think the most creative aspect of their music is, Orpheus had this to say: "Probably the most creative thing we have to offer is variety. Each member of the band has diverse influences in their music and when we combine these to form songs, all of these influences shine through to create a nice blend that forces the listener to experience many emotions. A lot of bands out there right now focus all of their attention on anger and aggression. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but we prefer to expose our listeners to other emotions as well and we've received a lot of positive feedback as a result of this."
Orpheus has just recently finished recording their first full length album titled "Nature's Rubix Cube." They are in the process of writing new music as well as performing shows in the Philadelphia area. If you'd like to go to an Orpheus show, go to the shows section and get info on upcoming shows.
