ROUGH PLANET was the rough cuts web page of works in progress, rehersal tapes, etc. of the band HOME PLANET. HOME PLANET was an edge power trio from Los Angeles California composed of 2 earthy geologists and a frenchman.
History:
HOME PLANET formed in early 1997. We all grew up in the Hollywood/Silver Lake area. We all have jobs most of the time, wives (or ex-wives), two of us have kids, two of us have geology degrees. We feel that rock music is falsely equated with youth culture and this myth is perpetuated by those that believe in it and those that market it that way. For us it is a way to express ourselves musically, it is the music we like, we grew up with, it is from the bottom up, it is post modern folk music if you like. As opposed to being "unplugged", we are "plugged".
The Band Now:
HOME PLANET has reformed as “OYSTER CLUB”and we still do HOME PLANET songs. OYSTER CLUB is composed of 2 of the 3 members from HOME PLANET Steve Tarnoff: Singer/songwriter and guitarist, and Mike Roux: drummer and backup vocalists. Joining us at least provisionally is Martin Tarnoff a.k.a. Suiauthon Lhûgrancion (son of band leader Steve Tarnoff) playing bass and adding some younger blood to the trio. (Former HOME PLANET bass player Mark Whitten is in another band at this time). The band plays 60’s and 80’s influenced rock with a philosophy that rock music is essentially plugged in folk “commoner” music at least in a band’s stage before they “make it” and become “gentrified” by membership in the culture club of the entertainment elite. The Oyster Club is named after one of several clubs whose membership was composed of prominent intellectuals from the Scottish enlightenment (e.g. economist Adam Smith; philosopher David Hume; geologist James Hutton. Benjamin Franklin dropped in as well). We could all use some enlightenment.
