Ryan Flagstad is a 24-year-old singer-songwriter who exudes his passion for performing with every song he sings. With his strong stage presence and a voice that crosses Dave Matthews, Eddie Vedder, and David Gray, Ryan Flagstad is as close to a sure thing as you will find in the music business. Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Ryan moved during his sophomore year of high school to central Missouri. It was there that he decided to pursue athletics and had hoped to someday coach. He entered the University of Missouri in the fall of ’97, and after two years without organized sports he decided to walk on the football team. He trained all winter long and when the time came for tryouts that spring Ryan surprised them all. He made the team as a wide receiver and defensive back, and had accomplished his goal. About the same time that Ryan decided he wanted to play college football he and a friend talked about learning guitar together. Ryan purchased a guitar, but since he committed to football his new guitar just sat in the corner. “I spent a lot of time and energy on football and for over a year it was just that,” Flagstad says. In retrospect, “I wish I had picked up the guitar a lot sooner.” Although Ryan says his football experience was a positive one, he quit the team the following year and focused all of his energy and commitment towards learning the guitar. “I was 20 years old and struggling with G, C, and D. I thought there was no way that I could be a musician." He continued to play and teach himself, and after a year of playing he went to his first open mic night. “There I was, nervous as hell and there they were – eight middle aged drunk men talking amongst themselves. I realized at that moment – regardless of what those men thought – that performing was all that I wanted to do with my life.” The desire to perform and express himself through his songs continued to grow, and that eventually led him back to Chicago where his older brother found him a gig. One gig a week turned into two gigs, and then four. News spread quickly of his capturing melodies and meaningful lyrics. Ryan Flagstad is currently carving his niche in the Chicago music scene, and it won't be long until he captures the attention of music lovers near and far.
