HISTORY
Sandwich’s story started in 1999 when Diego and Raymund decided they wanted to be together in a group. Diego’s former band mates Mike and Myrene are recruited. Raymund discovers Marc (Abaya) at a party while jamming to a Beastie Boys song. They land a recording deal with BMG Records on the same year and released their debut album, Grip Stand Throw on the same year. Sandwich was recognized by different award-giving bodies and received several nominations and awards on that very year.
After the success of their first album, Sandwich released their second album, Four Track Mind still under BMG Records. Four Track Mind was hailed Album of the Year on 2001 by Manila’s Rock FM Station – NU107.
After Sandwich’s record deal with BMG expired, the band continued to make music independently. On the year 2003, Sandwich began recording their third album. The said album was released January of 2004 with the title Thanks to the Moon’s Gravitational Pull. A year after the release of their third album, vocalist Marc Abaya decided to focus on a different career path. Guitarist Raymund Marasigan took over the vocals and to strengthen their sound, they asked Mong (guitars), who has already played for them for some time, to formally become a member of the band, thus leading to the present line-up
More than a year after working as an indie band, Sandwich was welcomed by EMI Music to be their recording artist. The booming music industry soon witnessed the redefinition of OPM Rock as the new material of Sandwich was released on their fourth album, Five on the Floor February of 2006.
MUSIC
Sandwich plays music which could be generally categorized as alternative to rock music. Sandwich has been making music for nine years now and still continues to live up to their passion – a trademark of energetic performances.
FILLING the LISTENERS
Being composed of genuinely talented members comes in handy as Sandwich continues to experiment on new sounds which can be heard on the remixes they come up with for their singles and on their live performances as well.
In between recordings and gigs, Sandwich continues to do small projects here and there. They have done soundtracks for several shows and movies such as:
HUMANDA KA OST: NGINIIIG – a horror show by Philippine TV Channel ABSCBN
MASILUNGAN Theme for HARIBON’s TV As (Haribon is an Organization who aims to promote advocacy to conserve nature)
CLOSE ENCOUNTER Close-Up’s jingle for TV and Radio Ads
BUKSAN MO Coke’s jingle for TV and Radio Ads
SUPER NOYPI OST: SUPER NOYPI (The Movie)
BAKIT ANG BABAE Kami nAPO Muna (A tribute to the APO Hiking Society)
ZAIDO Theme for GMA7’s primetime sine-serye: ZAIDO
In live performances, Sandwich never fails to rev up the audience with their staple of hits Two Trick Pony, Butterfly Carnival, Sugod, Walang kadala-dala, DVDX, and Sunburn. Last September 2007, Sandwich has been invited to take part and represent Philippines in the first AYAF1 in Shenzen, China. On the said event, Sandwich was awarded Judges Choice Award alongside ten (10) other countries.
Sandwich has just finished recording their fifth album which is set to be released by February 2008.
As long as there are ideas born and music to make, expect Sandwich to never cease making rounds in the entertainment industry and doing what they do best – making good music.
