  • Inland Empire Weekly Article

    Soul of the River
    By: Alex Distefano

    ZIPCODE: Riverside.

BEEN AROUND THE BLOCK: The band's original incarnation took shape in 2004. Its current lineup of Rene Felix, Steve Hansen and Brett Dawson has been in effect since '06.

FOR FANS OF: The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack Johnson, Sublime, Lenny Kravitz or Ben Harper.

LATEST SPINS: A full-length album-three years in the making, so you know it's gonna be good-is set to street in either October or November.

ON THE STAGE: The band has played all over, from Back to the Grind and Lake Alice in downtown Riverside, to Shamrocks in Chino Hills.

YOUR TWO CENTS: "We have a funky rock groove sound that is all our own. There are no guitar solos, or solos of any kind, on any of our songs. We have a great vibe and put on a great live show. We're your new favorite band as soon as you give us a listen."

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE: These guys don't do it for fame and fortune-the band's love of the music runs neck-and-neck with giving to a darn good cause. Soul of the River participates in the annual "IE Rock for the Cure," a benefit for the American Cancer Society. Plus, consider yourselves unworthy as this outfit was recently feted as the "Best Classic Rock" band during this year's Inland Empire Music Awards.

    ON THE WEB: www.souloftheriver.com www.myspace.com/souloftheriver

THE IE LOCAL MUSIC SCENE ROCKS BECAUSE: "Everyone involved, the people and the bands are all doing it purely for the love of music. Riverside's not gonna make you famous. There's a strong camaraderie between the bands and the people involved in the scene out here. It's amazing how good the bands are, half of my all-time favorite bands are from here; so many of them have great albums it's crazy. The problem is the average Joe doesn't realize that he/she can see their favorite band they haven't discovered yet for $5 down the street instead of paying $60 and driving into L.A. to see the Foo Fighters. I'm not talking about just us, I mean no matter what kind of music you listen to, there is a band in the IE playing locally that is freakin‘ awesome and will blow your mind. You just have to find it."

  • Wierdos in our Garage

This is an old post, but its worth reposting.

We were asked earlier to write an interesting story about a show or road trip and I couldn't really think of anything.  Most all shows are the same, sometimes its packed, sometimes its empty, sometimes you're playing horribly and the crowd thinks you're awesome, and other times you're playing great and the crowd could care less.   But I thought of a few things that were worth mentioning.

Ever since we first started rehearsing at our new rehearsal space, (which isn't in the best part of town) we've had a constant visiting weirdo hanging out at every rehearsal.  Its like when you're living with roommates, you always have that guy on the couch. You have a buddy that asks to crash on your couch "Just for a couple weeks" and a couple weeks turns into six months, when you finally get them to get their own place, a week later you have another friend asking to crash on the couch "just for a few weeks".  It's sort of like that.

We seem to attract weirdos when we rehearse. And don't get me wrong, they're always very good-natured wierdos, but they all have a few things in common.  They talk incessantly. Nonstop nonsensical gibberish. They're always there right before the band shows up, waiting with a few tall cans, already well on their way to being wasted, talking faster than Speedy Gonzales. Before, after, and especially between songs, when you absolutely must to get to work, they start talking about nothing and never ever stop.  And for a while you're just struggling to understand what the hell they're talking about.  No matter who they are, they're always really nice, so you don't want to be a dick. But after a while you just have to completely ignore them while they continue talking and get started on another song. And at the end of the night you've only got half what you wanted accomplished, because most of the time you were trying to make sense of what this maniac is saying, smiling, acting like you understand.  They're going on enthusiastically about how you should go from "that one part, into another thing that goes dah dah dah, then do a Queesnryche-kinda thing". Queensryche?!

They ALWAYS want to play the drums, never know how and never ever take the hint that its time for them to stop. Rene has to hound them for 20 minutes to get them off his stool. They change the dials on your amp to "fix your tone", so you have nothing but treble so it sounds like a tin can, or are wasted, knocking crap over, or singing ideas they have to add to your songs that were written two years ago, that sound like a cat in heat with a serious love of 80's glam-rock.  Or the best yet, is when one tries to work their way into being your new singer/guitarist/bass player/manager even after you sit down with them and try to explain that you're not looking for new members. And the thing is, once one stops coming around, a week later another shows up, first appearing normal, knocking on the garage door, saying, "Hey sounds great!  I'm digging you guys, can I hang out and have a beer?" And then you find them waiting out front the next day, and the next, and before you know it they're crashing on your couch.

  • Great Blog Review and the Winner of the Song Title Contest Announced!

    Whats up Party People!

Thanks for voting on the new song title, you guys are awesome!  The winner is "Glimpses in the Rearview Mirror" which our myspace friend Nichole came up with. We're going to the Rec Room studio Friday to finish it and we will email her a mp3 of the song.

Then Wednesday we're going to Sound Sanctuary studios to do the final or super semi final mixes on the album.

Also Melissa and Rob pointed out to us that they discovered us through the Shades of Grey Blog. And it's a great review of our music! It was written in May, but we just found out about it now. Its way cool to stumble across someone writing good things about our tunes. You have to check it out. http://shadesofgrayjournal.com/archives/music-column/

Thanks for digging our tunes, we have more to come around the corner.

    Soul of the River

  • You've submitted to us your titles for the next song. Now you vote on what it should be see our blog.

    Wassup Party People!

I told Steve and Rene I was going to call them “Party People” from now on. They thought it was lame. Don’t you forget it, Soul of the River will bring “Party People” back!

The last message we provided you with the lyrics to a new song we’re tracking and asked you to suggest titles. We got the titles in and we’re going to let you vote which one it should be. YOU BETTER NOT PICK ONE THAT SUCKS!! I’m kidding, we think all of them are awesome. The password is “Soul of the River” So here’s the poll:

    http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=6435655&blogId=500649188[http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=6435655&blogId=500649188

The poll ends on the 24th, then we’ll let you know what the new title is. If you choose wrong it will go on your permanent record. Here’s the lyrics:

Tearing out the driveway in the pouring rain
Sing a song of heartbreak I'm so full of pain

Ghosts on the highway and the blackened sun
Thunderclap of lightning and the engines hum

You changed, everything we had before is gone
    How easy you move on
And I'll try everything I can to make things right
but I'm all out of time

Flying down the highway tearing sheets of rain
thunderstorm and darkness come to greet my pain

screeching round the bend in a full on slide
woman break a man when her love has died

you’ve changed everything we had before was gone
    how easy you move on
and I'll try everything I can to make things right

    Said her love was gone
    and I was never home
    late nights with the guys
    I flip into the sky
    tumble down the bank
    never-ending nights
    never stopped to think
    cigarettes and beer
    I wasted all these years
    sweetheart don't you cry
    Don’t you waste your tears
    All the love I have
I give it to you dear
My selfish ways now they disappear
    quickly move along
go find a love that's strong
love opens up and lifts me in her womb
