"As a kid, I got to see the Bulawayo Church Choir sing in Botswana. Church choirs are numerous in southern Africa (particularly tourist-facing civic expression), and even though I was only ten or eleven years old, seeing the joy the church members had in singing for their church and community was absolutely amazing. Relatedly, I got the "In the Name of Love: Africa Sings U2" album over the weekend, after a number of recommendations. I like African musicians a lot, and own my fair share of Ladysmith, Damon, the Kutis and South African choirs (particularly those who focused on apartheid resistance music). I got to see the Soweto Choir sing here in Seattle a few years ago, which was very moving. I'd love to hear "Pride" in Xhosa or Zulu, but I really like the fact I can instantly sing along with the choir's sincere joy for—let's face it—a globally loved song. And it reminds me of the amazing, effortlessly hopeful southern Africans I've been fortunate to meet."
