El Salvador, 1986, was not the likeliest of settings for the birth of a new style of aggressive, cutting edge alternative rock with a Latin influence... or was it? Ravaged by years of civil warfare and natural disasters, the city of San Salvador stood as sprawling document of a land wrapped in strife and sorrow, yet a land that spawned an endless powerful array of artists, poets, writers, and thinkers. Through it all, three young men came together to do something much more jubilant... create music. That was the beginning of the remarkable career of the band known now as Stoic Frame. The quartet, which features Keith Sanchez on vocals and guitar, brother Todd Sanchez on bass, life long friend Matias Pizarro on drums, and Glenn "Budda" Benavidez on percussion and guitar rose from the scarred surroundings of El Salvador to become one of the most eclectic, inventive, and passionate performing bands today. They began playing together while barely in their teens, seeking out jam spaces along with other bands from the newly emerging Salvadorean rock scene beneath the thatched roofs of slummy San Salvador dives. Even Pizarro's move, in 1991, to New York to complete his schooling couldn't stand in the way of the band's prowess. While Todd Sanchez moved back to his childhood home of New Mexico during that time, and Keith remained in El Salvador honing his lyrical and musical abilities while fronting the popular rock band Adrenalina, the members of Stoic Frame remained in contact across the continents, preparing for the day when they would be reunited. Two years later, in 1993, that dream was realized. Stoic Frame reformed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, then proceeded to throw themselves into their musical careers with a verve rarely seen in rock today. Between touring jaunts across the U.S., the band has released an LP, two EP's in English, and two EP's in Spanish. In 1998, the band's boundless dedication was rewarded when the New Mexico Weekly Alibi reader's poll awards named the band "Best Rock Band" and Pizarro was lauded as "Best Drummer"; in 2000, Stoic Frame swept the same awards, earning nods for best vocalist, percussionist, drummer, and "Band of the Year".
