  it's amazing to think that people are still just discovering this seminal band, and perhaps experiencing the epiphany their oeuvre demands. with the addition of bands such as this to one's musical library, it's near-impossible to avoid re-evaluating one's past favorites in the stark light of this potent combo. all bands pale, to varying degrees, next to the birthday party. their very zeal of creation and life-as-art-as-life credo overshadows anything done before or since, and they do it wi... More... it's amazing to think that people are still just discovering this seminal band, and perhaps experiencing the epiphany their oeuvre demands. with the addition of bands such as this to one's musical library, it's near-impossible to avoid re-evaluating one's past favorites in the stark light of this potent combo. all bands pale, to varying degrees, next to the birthday party. their very zeal of creation and life-as-art-as-life credo overshadows anything done before or since, and they do it with style. anyone using the word "punk" in a description of this band is revealing their naivete; nothing so formulaic or loaded has any relevance to their contribution. It seems most hipsters are either birtdhay party fans or seeds fans, just as most are either on the joy division or new order side of the fence...and i think it reveals a lot about the individual, this choice of preference. while the seeds further cave's exploration of music-as-narrative, i've always felt that this "growth" came at the cost of some of the raw, boot-in-the-eye fire that is so much the party's stock in trade. i will always get down with a six-inch-gold blade, drunk on the pope's blood....and i will always do it to the tunes of the birthday party.
