AND LISTEN TO "SWELL" ******************** Pop/Rock band from Glasgow Scotland. Toured around the world with Lenny Kravitz, Maze, and on the Lilith Fair! Lauran has sung backupwith Robert Plant, Lou Reed, Rod Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne, Bangles and now touring with Dweezil Zappa playing baritone guitar and Chapman Sticks guitar (9 stringer). First, I have to let all my viewers know - this is the longest review ofany of the over 600 CDs we have on our site and with good reason. This CD is AMAZING!!! >earBuzz Review: 'I've got something to say, I think to kill you most everyday, i'll light you, ignite you, torch you up and throw you away, . . i'll write you from my prison cell everyday. . .(and the male backup singers sing. .) - she's vindictive'. Understatement. "Vindictive" is THEacoustic upbeat tune that spreadsjoy like a wildfire - tight, poppy, perfect, lyrically compelling about our heroine - ready to pay the prison price for working out her vindictive frustrations through setting fire to a jerk. And it's the first track! GangBangs UK is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Lauran Gangl, who has assembled an impressive list of musicians who have contributed to this musically satisfying record. The style is all over the place, fusion based jazz quirk, to sweeping ballads and straight ahead rock angst. Mostly the music challenges the pop of today and introduces us to a poetic and incredible new female voice in Gangl, who is completely comfortable with singing anything and this is everything. GangBangs UK, takes today's technology, adds some punk and "new wave" flavors, and Zappa like attention to arrangements that move from one end of the street to another without warning - and delivers musical/vocal performances that range from "in the pocket" to "out in left field". The music is undyingly original - track 13,"Destruct", takes so many musical turns and time signature challenges that you have to catch your breath, and then relaxes with a fluid piano solo in the middle right out of a dark NY night club (or in this case, L.A..). Many highlights are mp3'd on garageband.com/thegangbangsuk: "Something Else" - . . is. Co-penned by Danny Elfman, known for pushing envelopes in pop music, joins Gangl in throwing this one over the proverbial musical cliff - no postage necessary. One of the musical highlights on the CD,"Something Else" muses through the fact that it's always something. .as the musical journey writhes through noises, distorted guitar, and about five different obscure and brilliantly disturbing sounding passages. .ending abruptly - of course. Gangl's voice, which she manipulates from quirky phrasings in most of the CD's tunes, also showcases her lush beautiful melodic caressing, as in "Blind Faith" - a ballad with chorused clean guitars and enveloping keyboard patches that support Gangl's tortured beautiful voice as she questions the mystery of having an automatic blind faith in another - her soprano soars above the mix with obvious emotion and sincerity. "Blind Faith" reveals another influence. Gangl collaborated>with Dweezil Zappa - and Frank and the Mother's influence in Gangl's writing is all over this record, although not so much in the songs co-penned with Dweezil who also performs some of the guitar work on the record. Track 4 is a treat, as Gangl remakes Mike Nesmith's classic, "Different Drum" This is composition at it's inventive finest and one of the finest recordings to come into earBuzz, and the only one that has been accompanied by bandanas for sale. It also has abut the most thrown together, at-home packaging we've seen as well. But we believe that is on purpose- to let her listeners see she is a "down home girl" but with lots of SPUNK and TALENT! Jon Hewlitt- Earbuzz.com editor Purchase CD at Amazon.com-the GangBangs UK sea
