"The Hollis Wake charges at you with both fists clenched, only to give you a hug at the last minute." One reviewer's assessment of this band's sound is apt: The Hollis Wake successfully blends pop-laden hooks and harmonies with bone-crunching distorted guitars, thunderous drums and passionate, high-energy live shows. The Hollis Wake have become one of New Mexico's most sought-after acts, having sold over 700 copies of their first album, Suburban Crime Spree, at venues all over the state—from tiny pizza parlors to Albuquerque's largest stages, including the historic El Rey and Sunshine Theaters. In the fall of 2003, the band's talent was recognized officially when The Hollis Wake took first place in the New Mexico Showcase (Rock category). The group has since been given top billing at some of the state's largest outdoor festivals, including Zozobra, the New Mexico State Fair and Santa Fe's Second St. Experience. The Hollis Wake was even invited to play the regional Burning Man Festival, the first true "rock" band ever to do so. The Hollis Wake's wide appeal may be attributed to their refusal to follow the tired "frontman" format, opting instead to use three different singers and songwriters. The result is a sonic variety that critics and music fans alike find refreshing and endlessly inventive. The Hollis Wake's overall sound is hard to define, but their sound has been likened to acts as disparate as Weezer, the Go-Gos, Buffalo Tom, The Feelies, Pixies, Husker Du and Mike Watt (a music legend who, incidentally, played The Hollis Wake on his radio show). The band's fanbase is equally difficult to pin down: At a Hollis Wake show, 14-year-old girls dance alongside 50-year-old men, and every demographic in between. The band recently recorded their second album, Lo-Fi Highs / Hi-Fi Lows, at Santa Fe's award-winning Stepbridge Studios. The record was co-produced by Grammy-nominated engineer Tim Stroh, and was released on September 27, 2004. In the last few months, The Hollis Wake has gained increasing air play on local radio, and won the Local Access Showcase, a battle of the bands organized by Albuquerque radio station 103.3 The Zone. 2005 the band has won 3 NM Music Industry Awards for Best Alternative Rock Sing - 'Just Let Go', Best Punk Song - 'Paper Doll', and Best Mainstream Rock Song - 'The End (Again)'. The award-winning songs are the first three tracks on Lo-Fi Highs / Hi-Fi Lows. 2005 has also seen the release of tracks on The South Park Music Festival 2005 CD and 'Rock Outside the Box, Vol. II' - latter released October 2005 and available on CDBaby. November 2005 the band is taking time off from shows to concentrate on new material for a forthcoming CD/EP.
