From their varied hometowns (Ohio, New York, Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Middlesbrough and Paris), North London based 6 piece, Outside Royalty release their debut album ‘All Nights Out’ on 28th September 2009 on their own label - Mothlight Records.
Combining their brand of new wave indie pop with tender americana and folk, there are many comparisons made in haste about Outside Royalty, but none of them tick all of the boxes. Let’s see… Roxy Music, kind of… Arcade Fire, not really… Killers, possibly… Pulp, I suppose… but few tell of what to expect as a listener, because Outside Royalty have been working hard on the UK’s underground indie scene, forging their very own unmistakable personality and sound.
The songs are insidiously melodic, instantly memorable, personal, relatable, intelligent and new — driven by danceable drums, new-wave analogue synths, guitars and strings. The variety of the songs contained in their 10 track, 37 minute debut release is unparalleled by most of their contemporaries, and rather harkens back to albums you’d expect from living legends David Bowie, The Kinks, or The Who. But there is nothing really retro or derivative about the sound - it’s simultaneously unique and widely accessible. It’s something very special that is not going unnoticed!
Singer Adam Billing’s lyrical themes often tap into a collective human subconscious, bringing to the surface (amongst other things) the fragility of the human condition, hope, fear, the universe, deity, voyages of self discovery, life, and ultimately death.
