Combining the bluster of classic guitar-rock, the sweat-drenched catharsis of prime rhythm 'n' blues and visceral immediacy of greasy pop hooks, The Pawn Rook Four(or, more succinctly, ThePR4) have steadily built a devoted fan base throughout the Southeast, and now to New York City.
Introduced to each other by a mutual adoration for the Beatles and the more melodic detours of seminal rock and pop, Ty Popick (guitar/vocals) and Jeremy Morgan (vocals/guitar) - now both 22 years old - formed The Pawn Rook Four while still attending high school. The two have retained a neo-Lennon-and-McCartney-esque songwriting relationship, while still absorbing innumerable new influences along the way.
1998's self-titled live-to-4-track debut opened the door for Songs for a Romantic Evening, the band's critically acclaimed first full-length release. Romantic Evening showcased the ThePR4's devotion to intricate classic-pop production (Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper's, et al), while maintaining the raucous dual-guitar attack of the band's live show.
Sharing the stage with such acts as Superdra (Arena Rock)), Candlebox (Maverick), Subrosa (Sony/550), Fuel (Sony/550), Sloan (murderecords), Ultimate Fakebook (Sony/550/Initial), Ozma (Kung-Fu), Further Seems Forever (Tooth & Nail), Boy Hits Car (Wind-Up), Mock Orange(Lobster), Nerf Herder (Honest Don's), Seven Mary Three (Mammoth), MyHotel Year (Beyond/Universal) and the Rocking Horse Winner (Equal Vision) and Ozma(Kung-Fu); the Gainesville, Florida-based quartet has developed a reputation for riotous live performances.
In the spring of 2001, The Pawn Rook Four entered Private Island Trax in Los Angeles, CA with LA-based engineer/producer Malcolm Guess (Doug Weston's Troubadour, Paramount Studios) and the newest addition to their lineup -dexterous bassist Dan Smith. Mastered by Mike Maines at Arkain Studios in Gainesville, this 4-song EP blends boisterous guitar-driven agitation with the impenetrable groove of classic R&B.
The band's maturing musicianship and conceptual growth has evolved naturally within their music. More than three years since The Pawn Rook Four released their debut record, a fresh EP and lineup have emerged - new, improved and as restless as ever.
